Hi everyone! This isn't my first fic but it is my first Stardew Valley fic! I am going to stick to canon as much as possible but take some fun liberties as well. I'll try to post at least one chapter a week! I am open to any recommendations or criticism, so please comment! Thank you all for taking time to read my story <3

Chapter 1-New Beginnings

Thump

The jolt of the bus woke me up from my brief nap. I was exhausted from not being able to sleep the night before. I had been laying awake all night, tossing and turning. Wondering if this move was a big mistake. I knew that I couldn't keep living the way that I had been. Wake up, work until I couldn't see straight, eat a frozen meal, go to bed, and repeat. I had been feeling so empty, the only things that made me feel anything were alcohol and weed, and even those stopped doing anything. I knew that I needed a change. That's when I remembered an old letter that my Grandpa had sent, telling me to open it when I felt like city life was not enough for me. Inside was the deed to his farm and the promise of a peaceful and fulfilling life. That's how I ended up here. On an old rickety bus on my way to Stardew Valley.

Once I step off the bus, lugging a duffle bag and one suitcase, I see a cheerful woman with red hair waving at me. She looks really friendly and has a motherly aura about her.

"Hello, you must be Maeve! Wow, look at you all grown up. You probably don't recognize me because it's been so long, but I'm Robin, the local carpenter! I came by to show you to your farm." She smiles at me and her eyes crinkle happily at the edges. I chuckle awkwardly,

"Yeah, I'm sorry. My memory from back then is pretty fuzzy, but it's nice to meet you again!" I struggle to put my hand out to shake hers while I juggle my bags. She takes my hand and I can feel the calluses on them. "Let me help you with those." She says before effortlessly shouldering the heavy duffel bag. Wow, she's strong. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, she did say she was a carpenter after all. "Follow me, let's get you to your new home. Mayor Lewis is there making sure that everything is ready for you."

As we make our way up the path I can see the old cabin that my Grandpa had built. It had definitely seen better days. The entire property was overgrown with weeds, trees and rocks. It made me feel sad to see how the land that Grandpa had taken so much pride in had become so dilapidated it also gave me an unexpected surge of anger towards my father. He should have been the one to have taken at least some care of it over the years. Robin must have seen the look on my face. "I know that it's not what it used to be, but with some dedication I know that you can get this farm back to it's former glory!" She smiles at you and you can't help but smile back, her happiness is contagious. Before I can even open the door, an old man with a overalls and a mustache with a life of its own steps out and exclaims in surprise.

"Maeve! It's so good to see you! I'm Mayor Lewis, an old friend of your grandfather's. Goodness, the last time I saw you, you were only this high!" He gestures at his knees and chuckles. "It's good to see you all grown up and ready to continue your grandpa's work. I know this place looks a little rusty, but with some time and elbow grease you'll have it looking like nothing's changed!" I smile at him. "'Rusty?' more like crusty!" Robin says and we all laugh. "Don't worry, I can handle crusty." I chuckle. They both smile and Mayor Lewis clears his throat.

"Well, Maeve. I think we'll let you rest up and get your bearings a bit. But try to head into the village and get to know everyone! I know that they're all excited to meet you!" I nod, a little uncomfortable with the idea of having to make so many introductions. I don't mind people, but small talk is the worst. "Thank you, i'll definitely make my way into town soon!" I say before grabbing my things and making my way up to the door. I turn and give a small wave to the two retreating villagers.

When I walk in the door the first thing that I notice is the smell It smells damp and woody but I can still make out the smell of my grandpas tobacco, he used to grow his own and the smell makes me feel like I'm little again. I look around the small room and see a cozy bed that is calling my name, I'm absolutely exhausted. I plop my stuff down and curl up under the covers, letting the smell of old tobacco envelop me as I drift to sleep.
