The sky was gray and cloudy, it looked like it was going to rain at any moment, in other words it was another day of the same dark days in Small Heath. Except it wasn't.

You were coming back from the market with your hands full. You had shopped to cook dinner for you and your father. He had finally returned from his mission assigned to him by his bosses the Shelby Family.

He was all you had. Your mother had died while she was giving birth to you, you knew her only from photos. Your father always spoke very highly about her. You had no siblings.

Sometimes it was hard for you to sit alone between four walls when your father was somewhere on business. You always waited patiently for your father, who, as he had promised, always came back to you.

The street was empty, only one man was walking away with quick steps, almost running. You noticed that the door of your house was open. You stood on the door frame and froze. You felt your hands and feet soften. You dropped the bags from your hands, you heard the smashing of glass bottles of milk.

Your father laid lifeless on his back. The white wall was colored with his brains. He had a bullet in his head. You fell to your knees next to him and desperately checked for his pulse, which you didn't find. The only person you loved was gone. You were all alone.

"No, no, no, no!" you cried, brushing your hands through your hair.

You wondered what to do now that you remembered your father's words, which he always repeated when he went on business 'If something happens to me, go to Thomas Shelby. He will help you.'

You were barely able to stand up. You were shaking uncontrollably. Outside it had already begun to rain cats and dogs. Lightning struck startling you. You ran with all your might to the Garrison. You immediately entered the private room of the Shelbys, making their heads turn towards you.

In the room were sitting Thomas Arthur John and another man you didn't know. There was not a man in Birmingham who didn't know the Shelby brothers, but you saw the other lad for the first time.

"What is it, girl?" Arthur's eyes widened when he saw you, he was quick to notice your red eyes.

"My father he was..." you had stopped crying, simply because you couldn't cry in front of other people, but you were still shaking "he was killed." you found it hard, finishing your sentence.

"Who was your father?" John asked inpatient.

"Theodore Black. He used to be a peaky blinder." you explained, you felt like throwing up, but you somehow held it back.

"I'm sorry for your loss." the unknown man said, you looked at him and nodded. You didn't know what else to do or say.

"Shut up, Michael." Arthur shushed him and then asked "When was he killed? Did you see the bastard who did it?"

"I suppose an hour ago and no." you replied quickly. You were feeling odd and wished you never came here in the first place.

"Arthur stop interrogating the girl." Tom Shelby finally decided to join the conversation "I'm sorry for your father, he used to be one of my best men. And perhaps you don't know, but at his request I had promised Mr. Black that if something happened to him personally, I would take care of you." his words felt genuine.

"Thank you, sir." you looked down at your feet, ashamed. You didn't want to bother them with your presence, they were a big family already.

"Now, Michael, you take Miss Black
to your mom's place for tonight, explain the situation to her. Arthur John you go to Theodore's house." Thomas gave out the orders and the men stood up, putting on their black coats.

"Let's go." Michael put his coat around your shoulders, he had noticed that you were soaking wet because of the rain.

When you left the pub, outside it was already dark and cold. The rain had not stopped, but it had diminished. Michael put one hand on your back, urging you to walk faster.

When you got to his mother's house, you were surprised that Polly Gray opened the door. Of course you knew who Mrs. Grey was, she was a bloody icon. She was also surprised to see the two of you. She quickly invited you inside, seating you by the fireplace and serving you a cup of hot tea.

While Michael was talking to Polly, you quietly drank your tea, looking at the fire. The coals crackled slightly from time to time under the scorching flames, calming you. You were trying to absorb everything that had happened today. Polly came to you, making you lose your train of thought.

"Follow me, dear." she took the empty cup from your hand and left it on the coffee table. After you stood up she turned around and went up the stairs. You walked close behind her and followed her into the room she entered. The room had one double bed, a wardrobe and a desk.

"This is Finn's room." she explained "You can stay here tonight, we'll think about tomorrow later." she opened the wardrobe and started looking through the clothes.

"I doubt any of Finn's clothes will fit you, but it's better than those wet ones." she pulled out a shirt and trousers and she handed them to you. You wondered who that Finn guy was, you had never heard of him before.

"Where will this Finn lad stay if I take his room?" you asked as you left the clothes on the bed.

"Don't worry, he won't come tonight. He's on a mission." she explained and you exhaled calmly. "Now I'll leave you alone. If you need anything I'll be in the next room." she said and after you nodded Polly left you alone.

You quickly changed your clothes. The shirt of this Finn, for whom you had no idea who he was, reached the middle of your thigh, and his pants were way to long and big around your waist.

You took off the pants and laid down on the bed trying to get some sleep. You sobbed softly, remembering your father and how you couldn't say your last goodbye to him. He was no longer by your side and your simple life had changed drastically.
