These past nights have been extra chilly, and you've been waiting on the campfire all summer long; so, when all the pits are started up and everyone's small groups have found their own fire, you happily plop yourself down on the blanket you laid out at the farthest pit near the edge of the forest, opening up the goods Sato brings out one by one from his pack.
Graham crackers. Chocolate. Marshmallows. Summer s'mores.
Sato prepares them while you open up a potato chip bag you brought, watching as he casually throws one in the air that Tokoyami's Dark Shadow swiftly engulfs.
"They eat?" Did I say that out loud?!
But Tokoyami simply nods to your dumbly put question, and you look amazed at Dark Shadow.
Koda's friends and the others here didn't mind when you walked up with him. They must be getting used to your silent presence as you don't talk all that much to either Sato or Tokoyami, but they're cool with Koda's quietude, which means they're okay with both of you just sitting here doing your own thing. Their buddies from the other class have taken to sitting on their own blanket to the right, but they don't know you, which means they don't have to register your presence. Perfect.
Koda, mouth full of the single bite he took to eat the whole thing, begins to sign a bunch of words. Fiercely focused on his hands, you only end up picking up on his enthusiastic, "Delicious."
You take a bite of yours and agree, "Mhm."
"Miss, you know sign language?"
It's a question from the beast-man sitting on the adjacent side with the couple of other B kids who came to this fire. They look impressed; well, they're about to be disappointed.
You shake your head, blushing about your answer, "No, I only know like five words. Koda taught me." Now you can only manage to face Koda, nibbling on the cracker.
It's half-true. You definitely know how to sign and read at least five words, but you're not demonstrating anything else you'll surely butcher. You aren't even breaking into the novice category, just a hobbier that picked some small things up from trying to make not-boring conversation during the few times you've hung out with Koda and his animals.
"Koda, teach me something," one of the boys is excited, "How do you say...," rubbing his chin before he decides on, "Fuck you, fuck your mom, fuck your dad, fuck your grandm-"
Poor Koda doesn't know what to do, waving his hands in swift refusal while you laugh into yours as they joke around and you notice, surprised, that you've both been plugged into their circle.
These guys are nice and all, and their energy is great, but you really just want to sit here and enjoy the fire, so you do just that.
You chew on the buttery treat while you adjust your soft white cardigan in front of the dancing flames, the voices of Tokoyami and another speak intelligently, Koda's soft laugh besides yours adds to the more boisterous ones from the boys failing their practice lesson, and the sound of a crinkling foil bag followed by a crunch adds to the cicada songs under the summer night.
It's peaceful.
Today's been a nice day - not only because it's the last day before you at long last return to the safety of home and privacy - but also because you've been feeling happier lately. Is happy the right word? Rejuvenated? Refreshed?
Whatever it is, you know it probably comes from the fact you've spoken more to your classmates these past weeks than you've probably done for the entirety of last year. As if you're part of the class...
"-gonna pass these around to the others," you didn't mean to pry, but Sato's words perk you up.
You scoot closer to his work station, which is the gingham blanket beside yours, "Do you need help?"
