"Rick!" I instantly recognized the voice and I felt my stomach drop. "I'm Back, Old Friend!"
The Governor. I knew he was coming, but I didn't think there were any people left who'd agree to be with him in taking over a community that was never his. I couldn't help but wonder what he could've told them.
We all lined up along the fence. I stood next to Rick as he debated going down there. There was a chance he'd be shot on the way over but there was also the chance the Governor would wait. He loved to have conversations with his victims before killing them.
"Bring little Jo there down with you!"
"Let's go," I said.
Rick turned to me. "Not a chance in hell."
"What if something happens? I can help you, maybe negotiate."
"You help me from right here. You're an amazing shot and I trust you with my life, but I will not put you at risk. You're staying."
I exhaled, "Okay." I had to trust him too.
We watched for minutes that felt like hours. Then I saw him. Vince in that ugly brown jacket he always wore. He was standing to the right of the tank with a sword in hand, perched on his shoulder. I felt a tap on my arm, looking back Daryl handed me a rifle and a sniper. When I took them he squeezed my shoulder lightly before kissing my head and moving down the line of us until everyone was armed.
I used the scope to see better and rested the barrel in the metal wiring. Vince held Michonne's sword. She was brought to the front of the tank and put on her knees with her hands bound, then they brought out Hershel, he too was bound.
"Daryl," I called him over softly. He stepped in between me and Carl. "Look, the two nutjobs found each other again."
I knew he'd got back to the Governor given the opportunity, we all did. However, no one thought he would join in an attack because Amelia and Michael were here. Vince made it clear they were important to him.
"Not surprised," Daryl huffed.
"They have Hershel and Michonne."He looked through my scope.
"Take the shot."
"I can't. What if the timing is wrong? Believe me, I want to. I want to invert his fucking ribcage," I fumed. "But all hell might break loose and Rick wants me to wait for his signal."
"I understand the situation but I didn't need that image in my head." I looked at Beth who was right on the other side of me.
"I'm sorry."
"As soon as get your chance, Jo, take it," Daryl said. "Don't wait."
When I brought my attention back, I saw Michonne's sword pierce through Herhsel's chest. My breath caught in my throat and I froze. I prayed that what I just witnessed didn't happen. I looked through my scope and Hershel was face down in the grass with the sword sticking out of his back. All hell broke loose in the blink of an eye. The exact situation that was supposed to be avoided.
