I woke up slowly, the soft hum of the night lulling me into awareness. I found myself slouched in the armchair, a cozy blanket draped over my lap. The room was dimly lit by the moonlight filtering through the curtains, casting a gentle glow over the living room. Mina and Kirishima were still asleep on the couch, nestled together under a thick quilt, their breathing slow and steady. The sight of them so peaceful brought a small smile to my face, but I noticed something was off—a certain someone was missing.
I stood up quietly, careful not to disturb the sleeping pair, and glanced around the room. My gaze shifted to the open balcony door, where a faint, cool breeze slipped in. Curiosity piqued, I made my way over, my steps light against the wooden floor. As I reached the doorway, I paused, leaning against the frame, and saw Katsuki standing outside, leaning against the balcony railing with a cigarette dangling from his fingers.
"You know, smoking can kill you, right?" I teased, a smirk playing on my lips as I watched him.
Katsuki, startled by my sudden appearance, turned his head slightly, his crimson eyes meeting mine. He didn't say anything at first, just looked at me with that intense gaze of his, one that always seemed to see right through me. Then, with a flick of his wrist, he knocked the ash off the cigarette, his usual cocky expression returning as he leaned back against the railing.
"Tch, you're one to talk. I've seen you light up a few times. Shouldn't you be asleep? It's late." His voice was gruff, but there was a softness underneath, a hint of concern that he'd never admit to.
"Hey, I rarely smoke," I shot back, feigning defensiveness as I stepped out onto the balcony, the cool night air brushing against my skin. I moved to stand beside him, resting my arms on the railing as I looked out over the beach. The moon hung high in the sky, its pale light shimmering on the waves below. The scene was almost dreamlike, the kind of quiet beauty that made you want to just stop and take it all in.
"What's on your mind, Kats?" I asked gently, turning my head to look at him. His profile was sharp against the backdrop of the night, his blond hair tousled slightly by the breeze.
Katsuki exhaled another puff of smoke, the white cloud dissipating into the night before he let out a low sigh. He didn't answer immediately, as if he was considering whether or not to open up. Finally, he spoke, his voice quieter than before.
"Nothing much. Just couldn't sleep. Thought some fresh air might help."
His eyes remained focused on the ocean, but there was something in his tone, a trace of something deeper that he wasn't ready to share. It made me wonder what was really going through his mind.
I hummed softly in acknowledgment, not pressing him further. Sometimes, just being there was enough. The two of us stood in comfortable silence for a while, the sound of the waves and the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind filling the space between us. I could feel the tension in him, the weight of unspoken thoughts lingering in the air.
Then, on a whim, I asked, "You got an extra one?" I gestured toward his cigarette, a small smile tugging at my lips.
Katsuki looked at me, a bit surprised by the request, but didn't hesitate. He pulled out the pack from his pocket and tapped one out for me, handing it over with a slight smirk.
"Here, knock yourself out," he said, his tone light, but there was something affectionate in the way he said it. He flicked open his lighter and held the flame steady for me, his eyes catching the light as they locked onto mine. I leaned in, lighting the cigarette before taking a slow drag, savoring the moment.
