'so friends?' he tried not to show his disappointment.

As his God heard him, the waiter appeared with their snacks and they silently indulged in them.

"oh wait you must listen to this song I recently heard." She opened Spotify and played the song on medium volume checking if anyone is getting disturbed. She kept the phone between them and pointed to get his focus there. He nodded slightly and played attention to the song, eyes flickering to her in between.

आसमाँ से जो है आया तू सितारा वहीयारा, तेरे बिन एक पल भी अब गवारा नहीं

He sees how she hums  and in a very light voice starts singing too

आसमाँ से जो है आया तू सितारा वहीयारा, तेरे बिन एक पल भी अब गवारा नहीं

She looks up to him

मेरा ख़्वाब है तू ही

He takes a short breath and she smiles properly looking at him now

जो बे-नक़ाब है यारी तेरी ....तुझी पे मेरी ज़िंदगी.... हुई इस क़दर है फ़िदा

'gumshuda..gumshuda.. oo-hoo gumshuda' She sings smiling towards him and he listens clearly to the song, which felt so meaningful.

"It was great, wasn't it?"

"meaningful." He agrees, his mind back to 'friends?' the question was still hanging

'just say it, don't regret it' His mind said

'it's not easy' he argued back

'now or never'

"You didn't answer my question?" he snapped back

"huh?"

"I asked where are you staying or are you planning to return?" her voice sounded hopeful

"I-..haven't decided." He said truthfully.

"It's okay." she tried to master a smile but couldn't. Did he just disappoint her?

"Mallika." he breathes and she looks at him.

"I like you."

He

did

it.

She blinks stupefied.

"Look." he softly puts his hand over hers and she looks at him.

"I've known you for a year now. I've your brightest of days, to your breakdowns and the ugliest of moments, if they were ugly enough to witness?" he says doubtfully and pauses.

"A-and.. when I saw my parents match making and I met the girls I felt like I couldn't fit it. I don't know, I-I just.. doesn't mean I fit perfectly in your life. We're both messy, chaotic enough in our minds, but I had this confession, and I don't want any more regrets in my life." He sighs. He notices how she softly wraps her fingers around his slowly.
