Alphas provide and protect, Betas defend and heal, Omegas nurture and make a nest.
That's all Evan had ever heard growing up. With an Alpha father, a beta mother and beta sister, Evan was expected to be an Alpha.
When he presented as a male omega at the age of 11, he could feel the anger and disappointment he constantly lived with increase impossibly further. The reluctant familial bond he felt with his parents, created through blood, not love, grew even weaker and weaker the older he got.
The sibling bond he had with Maddie was the only thing keeping him from becoming a Lone Wolf. And being an Omega Lone Wolf was the most dangerous thing, as Alphas would try to claim him regardless of if he said no or ran away.
When Maddie left only a few years after he presented, he clung to the sibling bond. He could feel it fade with separation, but Maddie had done her best to make sure it never broke. She appeared at least once a year, sometimes even twice a year, to reestablish their bond and to spend time with her baby brother.
"Go. Get away from here. Find your pack, find your home. I will always be your sister," Maddie had told him quietly, just after his 16th birthday.
She had over heard their parents discussing an arranged mating bond with a family of Alpha's they knew. Evan knew the female Alpha, the one they were considering, and he didn't like her one bit.
She was aggressive, assertive, thought she was better than everyone, considered Omegas nothing more than someone to warm the nest and an incubator. He didn't want that for a mate.
"Come with me, we can go together. Doug will never have to know," Evan had pleaded, refusing to take the keys to the jeep Maddie was trying to press into his hand.
Maddie had smiled sadly, fingers brushing over the bite on her shoulder. "He'll always find me, Evan. But you, you're free. You're strong, capable, smart. Go find who you are without our parents words hanging over your head. And remember, Omegas are powerful, okay? They're so much more than what people think, they're the ones who will fight to the death for the pups, who will defend their family with everything inside them. You're strong, and don't ever forget that, okay?" She said firmly, taking his hand and pressing the keys into his hand.
"Write to me. Doug monitors my phone, so send them to the hospital. I might not write back, but know I will get them, and I will always be your sister," she'd said, gathering Evan into a tight hug.
They had scented each other, Evan moving on instinct even though Betas didn't have extremely prominent scent glands like Alphas or Omegas. But the sense of pack always settled over him every time he picked up her very faint scent of coffee and chocolate, reminding him of his youngest years before he presented.
"I love you, Evan. Buckley siblings against the world, right?" She'd promised, holding her pinky up. Evan brightened, smiling happily as he linked his pinky with hers.
"Always. If you find a way to escape, I'll be there, okay?" He had promised and they'd kissed their closed fists, sealing the promise.
Evan held out his wrist, letting Maddie lightly bite down on the scent gland to strengthen their sibling bond. The love and family that pulsed through his core always made him dizzy, such an unfamiliar feeling he almost couldn't recognise it anymore.
He did the same to her, feeling the bond snap to full strength. Which it would stay like this for at least 6 months before it'd start fading, though wouldn't ever fully break unless one of them died or purposely severed the bond.
"Now go, before Doug or our parents come searching," Maddie insisted, pushing Evan gently towards the jeep. "I'll send postcards of everywhere I go, I promise. I love you Mads," he had called as he hurried into the jeep, Maddie blowing a kiss.
