On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.

Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.

THERE WAS A SOFT knocking on her bedroom door. Eight, of course, expected it to be her father with instructions to ready herself for more testing. But there was no talking through the door, rather, she watched cautiously as the doorknob twisted and the door swung open.

Other than Grace with her specific knock, nobody ever entered her room. Her family had learnt their lesson a long time ago and considering all her siblings had left – it was only her father, Grace, and Pogo to keep her company.

She never wanted their company.

Raising her hands in preparation for an intrusion, a cane struck the floorboards of her room to signify who it was. Pogo. He was quick to follow his cane, and he stayed a great distance from her, back to the door. She hastily put on her glasses and returned to her book.

"I regret to inform you, Miss Y/n, that your father died last night," Pogo kept his head tilted downwards, refusing to make eye contact, "in his sleep." he added after a moment of silence.

She shifted on the bed, placing the tome she'd plucked from the library on the bedside table. Y/n didn't particularly want to show any emotions in front of him, so she tried spinning the conversation.

"Pogo, I'm wearing my glasses, please look at me." She pleaded, not expecting him to meet her eyes. Her jaw fell open. "You're the first person to look me in the eyes in 12 years." She was stunned. Not even her father met her eyes. And all of her siblings feared to after the 'garden' incident.

"The coroner suspects your father died from a heart attack, Miss Y/n. Yet with Sir Hargreeves no longer being with us, you are free to go. There is no longer any obligation for you to stay." She stood ramrod straight and approached the old chimp steadily, trying her best not to alarm him.
