I stood in the arch of the gazebo, my back shivering. Being alone was... lonely and I had never felt quite like this before. I always had my thoughts as company when things got tough. I would lock myself in my tiny apartment and observe, deduct and think. But now, I was truly alone and I didn't know how to feel about it.

Had it been worth it; pushing everyone away?

I didn't know. I had never understood how it felt not to know something. Well, now I did. It was a burning sensation; being lost- it ate me from the inside out.

"Everything gather around! Gather 'round" the voice took a breath. "The Silverguard Family has a few words for all of us- so please make your way to the Main Ballroom Hall" I was surprised to see the driver from all those days ago double down as a butler.

The situation was way worse than what I had realised. Was their income that bad? Could they not hire more staff?

I sighed, taking in the packed atmosphere of the ballroom. Its warmer temperature entangled me, easing my shivering. I felt a sense of unease, being surrounded by so many people I didn't know.

"Esteemed guests-" the tiny voice of Lady Silverguard croaked "-we are more than happy to welcome you to our Masquerade Ball." she said that, even though she didn't wear a mask nor a costume herself "-which we have been planning for a long time." Her smile was wide, her performance on-point.

The audience exploded into loud clapping and a round of applause echoed throughout the hall. Lord Silverguard, stood up himself, saying a few words about history, the way we shape it and other philosophies, which I paid little attention to.

"This is a celebration of unity. We may not have maintained the best of relationships with all of you, but we invite you here to fix those broken bridges and instead, turn our focus onto a new path;" he took a breath and Lady Isadora, moved by his passionate speech, interwined her fingers in his.

"-the long road that is the future, because together, we make Uproarium strong!"

His words were blurred out by a shuffling in the crowd.

My eyes were fixated on a particular guest, who slithered his way between the others, trying to fit in. Yet to me, he stood out like a wolf amongst a herd. I made a step forward, gently moving Mrs Rodriguez out of my way. She gasped, offended.

"Oh excuse you!" her voice was hoarse, barely above a whisper "Mind your step." she croaked, waving her fan threateningly.

"Sorry" I winced, realising I said that too loud "I'm sorry, excuse me." I moved past her, getting closer and closer to the man in black by the second.

Another person closed off my path. I was completely taken away by the constant joy she radiated- you guessed it: Miss Cynthia Fairchild.

"Hi dear, how's your night been? Well, let me tell you mine's been eventful." she looked up at me, straightening her round glasses. She was dressed as what I believed to be a parrot and it was a nice costume too. The layers of colourful feathers landed on top of eachother perfectly, forming a pair of rainbow wings held together by leather straps.
