13th June 1973"Do you wish I was different?"
I bet on losing dogs - Mitski
It was a special day for Rosalie. Her birthday. She was excited because that day she could start a new chapter. Be a new version of herself, and be better than last year.
Ever since James said she was the ugly one in the family, that stuck in her brain. She thought it was stupid that she had to remember it even though he most likely already forgot it the second it came out of his mouth.
The day she turned 13 things would change. She'd be
pretty like her mother and sister. At least she hoped for that. It was a shame she couldn't see her own beauty, but with many people saying otherwise it was impossible not to think that way.Rosalie was currently in her room getting ready. She had on a beautiful green dress that made her red curls and blue eyes outshine.
A knock was heard and the door slowly opened. Her mother was in vision.
"I wanted to see if you were ready to come downstairs" Her mother explained.
"I am" She said with a bright smile.
"Well" she looked her daughter up and down "you look great"
"Thanks"
"Except for your hair, please don't go out like that you'll make yourself a fool" Her mother sat down on Rosalie's bed patting beside her signaling her to also sit down.
"Your already 13 Rosalie. A lady, the problem is you dont look like a lady. No one will pay attention to you if you look like that. I want you to change for the better. Act and dress like a girl from a wealthy family"
"But what if this is what I like?" Rosalie replied with a quiet tone not wanting to upset her mother.
"That was an order not a favour. It doesn't matter what you like or not, I don't want any clowns in this family. Do you understand?" Rosalie simply nodded.
"And I'm saying this because I'm your mother. No one will ever tolerate you like I do. I let you be who you are your whole life and I thought that maybe it was a phase but I guess that that's who you are. So I have to put the matter into my own hands"
"Guys don't like girls like you. No one does. I don't want my daughter to be the weird girl in school, the girl who everyone talks about because she acts like a lunatic. I wonder what you would be like without me"
"Do you like me?" Rosalie asked her mother.
"I love you"
"But do you like me"
"I want you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be" that was all Rosalie needed to know. Of course her mother didn't like her.
Rosalie stared at her nails picking at them not knowing what to say. She felt sorry for her mother. She wanted to apologize for not being the daughter her mother had expected.
Maybe if she was, she would like her. And maybe then she would give her a warm hug on her birthday instead than a cold lecture tearing her down about being ashamed of her own daughter.
She still loved her mother.
But maybe in another universe her mother would love her daughter.
Short chapter but very much needed to show more of Rosalie's and her mothers relationship.
Next chapters are going to be happier. The two last ones were a bit sad.
Did you get the ladybird reference??
