Lord of the dead saw first dozens, then hundreds, and finally thousands of his brethren in the form of pillars of light heading for the Lower World.
After a few months, the heavens were so depopulated that it was much more common to encounter a nymph or the soul of a mortal than any deity. Of course, the Upper World was not completely deserted.
In accordance with Izanagi's promise, he remained in place to maintain the balance between the regions in the absence of many key figures. Shiva, unlike his son Ganesha, did not go to Earth either. He trusted the power of the primordial god, but he knew that three pairs of hands are better than one.
Thanatos was simply over the moon. Now that Chernobog, Anubis, and many other patrons of the fallen had gone to Lower World he had many more souls to purify. Nergal, who had also decided to remain in Heaven for the time being, wondered seriously where the limits of a resident of Olympus' workaholism lay.
There were also cases like Hestia. The little goddess of the hearth was... too lazy to start a family, when the Lower World was still not a very peaceful place.
She decided that her time would come... in about a thousand years, after Zeus, Hera and others had established order.
Meanwhile, this god was prevented from living among people by a moral dilemma. A sense of duty was only a minor reason here. The real puzzle for his mind and heart was the woman whose soul he had purified countless times since he took over his function. Her spirit was pure, always joyful, and watching her daily life from his throne gave him the greatest joy. The
young lady, just over twenty years old, worked in the fields with her parents. She planted seeds, watered plants, harvested crops. Perhaps only Demeter and other gods of agricultural products could find something interesting in this. However, for the god of death, it was not about the activities performed.
He admired her beauty. Milky skin, tanned to a brownish shade by the summer sun, long, shoulder-length, walnut hair, black eyes that gleamed like polished obsidian.
Her warm smile, which seemed to pour life into the guarded parents, soothe the moods of the farm animals, cheer up the neighbors' sad children and warm the hearts of all the villagers.
What would it look like if a god suddenly descended from the heaven and confessed his love to her? Would she immediately reciprocate the feelings because of his divinity? Would she consider herself unworthy of a relationship with a supreme being? Maybe she would simply be terrified and run away at the sight of a man who was the embodiment of death?
Even if by some miracle he managed to bond with her, it would do her great harm. He could not give a mortal woman children, thus depriving her forever of the opportunity to start a family and discover the great happiness that is parenthood.

- Heh... - he sighed deeply. - Eons on my shoulders, and I have problems like some youngster who has noticed the opposite gender for the first time. How pathetic - he scolded himself, then went back to his job.

Ouranos' plan gradually proved to be a great success. The simpletons blessed with the Falna, who had never wielded a weapon, might not have become invincible warriors immediately, but their progress in acquiring skills of all kinds was incomparable to those who were not members of any family.
Of course, those who dared to descend into the Great Hole gained Excelia the fastest, but the entire continent was still swarming with monsters of various types, which reproduced naturally. Nevertheless, their offspring were much weaker than the specimens emerging from the walls of the hellish abyss, and as a result, they gave much less experience.
That is why so many gods flocked from all countries to the heart of the continent, once a symbol of despair and destruction, and today a vision of glory and strength, creating a real city of tents around it.
Merchants seeing this makeshift settlement often decided to change the direction of their travels slightly in order to get the most out of the gods and their children, who were willing to pay any price for goods unavailable in the wasteland hundreds of kilometers from any civilization. Families often lacking enough cash for bloodthirsty traders, in exchange for desired items, would give up their "drop". Fragments of monster bodies or magical stones collected from the ashes of fallen beasts were valuable enough for merchants to permanently change the flow of trade routes.
Over time, blacksmiths, medics, innkeepers and courtesans began to appear, looking for a living. Later, architects came to transform this chaotic conglomeration of pseudo-buildings into the largest city in the world.
The greatest of them was Daedalus, who not only designed the original layout of streets and city walls, but also headed the construction of the Tower of Babel itself.
Let's not look too far into the future, though. For now, the place that many, many years later was to become known as Orario was just a huge camp full of gods and their worshippers, only on the first level.
Despite their weaknesses, if we were to compare them to future generations, the families fulfilled their role. Monsters did not come to the surface, and those that already lived there were effectively exterminated, causing a significant decrease in premature death among all races. This would give the gods of death a break in their work, but since some of their colleagues had already left the heaven, the number of souls to be purified after dividing the tasks into a reduced staff remained the same.
A few hours later, the weary and tired god found a moment to relax. He poured himself some wine produced by Dionysus himself into a golden goblet and sat comfortably on his throne. He took a few deep sips of the drink, immediately giving his body a feeling of warmth and relaxation.
Removing the memories of the last soul, a woman who had been raped to death, had exhausted him mentally. He had seen a similar fate more times than he could count, but each instance was not pleasant. He decided to cheer himself up and chase away the dark visions with the sight of his beloved.
With a wave of his hand, he summoned a mirror that would allow him to observe the events currently taking place in the Lower World. He was certain that her charming smile would allow him to chase away his demons, at least for a moment.
Instead of an innocent smile, he saw only horror and terror painted on the face of the fleeing girl.
Burning houses, cattle torn apart, monsters devouring the flesh of dead or still breathing people. The image of hell on earth appeared before the golden eyes of the god of death, who immediately jumped up from his seat, throwing the goblet of wine to the floor.
The followers of the gods may have exterminated monsters like rats, but there were still hordes of these rodents. Over twenty goblins and a few orcs entered the girl's village with only two goals: to destroy everything in sight and to satisfy their hunger.
