Lila's night was looking to her as if it was going to run smoothly and just as perfect as she had imagined, it was now two past seven and Lila had run her finger to her door knob when she heard the clattering of noises and bodies rush into her house. Jolting slightly, Lila's brows furrowed. "They're here." She muttered, rolling her eyes. She hated herself for not getting ready quicker, she just hoped they paid no mind to her as she walked out. The noise downstairs grew louder with chatter and moving feet getting comfortable inside the Randle house. Gingerly she opened her bedroom door and made her way downstairs, head down. Soon she was at the kitchen, mere feet away from the front door. "Who's that?" A male voice said. Lila gulped and looked up, Steve's friends. The voice in question was Sodapop Curtis, Steve's co-worker and middle child to two brothers. "Just Lila, my little sister you know her." Steve said. "Oh right, hey Lila!" Soda smiled. Lila just nodded in response, wanting nothing to do with them at the moment. "I'm leaving now." Lila called out rushing to the door. "Wait Steve your gonna let her walk out by herself?" another voice interrupted. It was Darryl the older brother and sole guardian of Soda pop and their little brother Ponyboy who was also in the room. "Lila wait!" Darryl added. Lila wanted so badly to leave, so she pretended that Darryl's call had fallen upon deaf ears and she bolted out the house and began to make the trek to Cherry's house in her heels.
As Lila walked to Cherry's house, in the Randle house she had just departed from Steve and his friends began to bicker amongst themselves. "How could you let her leave like that?" Darryl scolded Steve, "I mean you're her older brother!" He added. Steve crossed his arms. "She goes out on her lonesome all the time I don't see why she needs me breathing down her neck. Besides she don't even like being seen with me. She likes pretending to a be a Soc! I go days without speaking to her Darry. You just don't get. Lila's a chic, you have it easy all your siblings are dudes ... and on top of that she's a chic who is embarrassed by me. " Steve rebutted. "Woah what chic is embarrassed by Steve, now?" Dallas Winston laughed bustling through the door, cigarette in his left and a beer in his right. His entrance was polarizing, as Dallas was the type of man that make chics weak in the knees, and he knew that too. He was a "bad boy" and any girl could fall into his arms and fall in love, each fantasizing about being whisked away in his charms. However, he did not care, he was in simpler terms a womanizer. "Dally!" Johnny Cade, one of Dally's closest friend's called out. Johnny was the opposite of Dally, reserved and shy. He was nervous around girls, but like Dally he got in a whole world of trouble and hurt, but unlike Dally he didn't want it. Johnny Cade could enter a room and unlike Dallas, he could go unnoticed, like a fly on the wall. "Trouble in paradise with Evie, your new girlfriend?" Dallas prodded sitting down next to Johnny. "No just my Soc sister." Steve grumbled. "Sister?" Dallas queried. You see, Dallas hadn't been in the gang as long as the other boys. No, for while the other had been alive to see both the Randle parents who had passed away five years ago and the Curtis parents who had past away one year ago Dallas had only been there after the Curtis parents had passed away. Both tragedies had been mostly dealt with before Dallas had come into the picture, furthermore the tragedy of Mr and Mrs Randle's death meant the gang no longer came to their house much, and Lila withdrew even more from Steve and Steve from Lila. So to Dallas Winston, Steve having a sister was unprecedented, and a Soc. "Soc?" Dallas laughed, "No way." he added. "I'm serious. She goes by Lila Flower, cause the Randle name ain't good enough for her I guess." Steve answered, his mood souring by the second. "I have anatomy with her." Johnny whispered to Dally. "She really a Soc?" Dallas asked, "Yeah she's a cheerleader, she never walks alone in school in fact she's almost always at the right side of Cherry Valance, you know Cherry Dal, don't ya?" Johnny replied, nudging Dallas at the mention of Cherry for just a few weeks prior Dallas had poured popcorn and Soda on the Red-head. "Yeah and at school she dresses like them to, I always see her in the library with Cherry and sometimes Marcia. She's a total Soc, she even sits like one to, you should see it." Ponyboy, the youngest Curtis added as he to went to school with the infamous Lila Randle. Though she was two years his senior, she was impossible to not hear about at school. She was one of the most popular girls in Tulsa High. "I've been some of her classes for years and we've only ever spoken a couple times. She isn't as bad as most Socs though, I reckon 'cause she's not really one." Johnny added thinking about the brief pleasantries he had shared with her. "Yeah Dal, ever since we was little she wanted nothing to do with us. She was always hanging on to her momma or out with her friends." Sodapop said. "She's a nice girl." Darryl said firmly, not wanting to gossip upon someone he deemed unworthy of unfavorable mentioning. "Can we stop talking about Lila." Steve interrupted.
Johnny looked at Dallas and whispered in his ear. "She came downstairs tonight, and since she has prom tonight was was all pretty. To be honest Dal, I think she looked mighty fine." Johnny whispered quietly. Dallas laughed. "In love with a Soc, ain't that taboo. Go for it man." Dallas muttered back. But he didn't realize how this simple statement would play out for him in the long run.
It was now ten and the boys were still lively drinking, smoking, and talking the night away. Dallas went upstairs to go to the restroom, when he noticed a door that was always closed had been left open. He had always figured it had been a closet, and he didn't really care much about it to be fair. But now he had put together that it was Steve's sister, Lila's room. He pressed towards to door. Thinking that if he could enter it he could see if she was really a "wanna be Soc". When he had entered her room, his queries were answered. It was a small room, but extremely neat. The walls were painted bright white with the furthermost back wall having pictures of her friends hung proudly on a bulletin board. Her bed was neatly made with floral pillows and a big pink comforter. On her desk there were books tightly stacked on shelves and a notebook however left carelessly out. Dallas, his curiosity peeking looked inside of the notebook. What he found within was collages of Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Elvis, Paul McCartney, and Michael Caine all stuck to the pages with such care. "Boy crazy isn't she?" Dallas chuckled to himself. He lingered in the room for a while.
On the other hand Lila ran down the streets leading to her house, tears streaming down her face. As she entered her house she ran up the stairs no care for who saw her. Her night had been dreadful and she had wished she could just disappear.
Dallas still in Lila's room took one last glance around the room before stepping out. As he began to step out the sounds of heels clacking onto the house's floor grew louder making him stay glued in place curious. It was Lila, he got a glimpse of her as she ran to her room loud tears accompanying her. He imagined that she would be not much of a looker, but as he saw her he thought she was a pretty fine chic. Smirking to himself he walked into the room as he did Steve, Johnny, Ponyboy, Soda-pop, Darryl, and Two-bit came into the room as well. Lila curled up on her bed crying. Dallas, slightly amused in a sick sort of way smiled slightly. Soda-pop walked towards the bed. "What's wrong Lila?" Sodapop asked. "Go away please." Lila replied crying into her pillow. "Oh come on Lila you got us worried now tell us what's wrong kid." Steve sighed. "I've had the worst night ever!" Lila cried. "What happen someone spilled punch on you or something" Steve replied rolling his eyes. Lila sat up. "All night no one would dance with me, they just wanted to dance with Cherry. And Cherry was to busy eating her boyfriend's face to care. Then they just left me, Cherry, Marcia, and their stupid boyfriends! So I stood alone by the wall like a loser, then when I went to go get punch these stupid boys poured the whole punch bowl over me. Look at my hair and my makeup and my dress! I look like a fool." Lila cried and cried. "And the worst part is since no one was dancing with me Mr.Thompson my math teacher offered to dance with me, it was humiliating!" Lila added. It was almost comical how bad it was.
"You want someone to dance with you?" Dallas asked. Lila looked up at the boy talking to her. He was handsome, she had never seen him before. Tall and dark haired. "More than anything." Lila replied. Dallas laughed. "I'll dance with you sweetheart." he cooed. Lila's heart swelled. He stepped towards her, "May I have this dance, doll." he asked putting his hand out for her. Lila's eyes widened. Steve rolled his eyes. "Pony man, put some music on." Dallas called grabbing Lila roughly. Ponyboy searched for the record player and put it on the record which was already sitting on the player. "Dreamy eyes" began to fill the room. Lila, tear stained yet beautiful and Dallas Winston. Steve grunted and left the room followed by Daryl, Soda-pop and Two-bit who was laughing. Ponyboy and Johnny sat by Lila's desk. Johnny's cheeks grew red as he saw her dancing. Dallas wrapped his hands around her waist. "What's your name?" Lila asked in a quiet tone. "Dallas Winston." he replied. Lila's eyes scanned the boy, she was sure he had heard his name in passing but she wasn't sure where. Lila was sure in that moment he was her prince, that even though he was a hood that he had come to save her. But Dallas, was not her prince, he had come not to save her but to use her for a brief moment. He knew she couldn't resist him, and he wanted to fill the curiosity he had briefly had about her. Blue eyes meeting Brown, Soc meeting greaser, but really it was, girl meets boy.
