The journey back from the Ruins of the Fallen was fraught with tension. Ethan, Zara, and Dr. Iris Vale moved cautiously through the Shadow Realm, the artifact now securely in Ethan's possession. The orb pulsed faintly, its power humming in tune with the dark, eerie surroundings. Despite their success in retrieving the artifact, the trio felt an uneasy calm, as if something sinister was lurking just beyond their perception.

"We need to get this back to the lab as soon as possible," Dr. Vale said, breaking the silence. Her eyes were fixed on the path ahead, but her thoughts were clearly elsewhere—likely calculating the next steps to keep the artifact safe from the Shadow King.

Zara kept pace beside Ethan, her usual confident demeanor tinged with a rare hint of concern. "The Shadow King won't take this loss lightly. We've dealt him a blow, but he's not finished with us yet."

Ethan nodded, his mind still processing the visions the artifact had shown him. He could feel the weight of his responsibility growing with every step. The Shadow King would stop at nothing to get the artifact back, and the thought of what might happen if he succeeded sent a shiver down Ethan's spine.

They were nearing the portal back to the real world when Zara suddenly halted, her hand on her weapon. "Do you hear that?" she whispered, her eyes scanning the shadows.

Ethan strained to listen, but all he could hear was the faint rustling of the wind through the twisted trees. "I don't—"

Before he could finish, a shadow darted out from the darkness, slamming into him and knocking the orb from his grasp. Ethan hit the ground hard, the wind knocked out of him. He scrambled to his feet, his heart pounding as he searched for the artifact.

Zara was already engaged in a fierce battle with their attacker, a figure cloaked in darkness, their features obscured by a hood. Dr. Vale rushed to Ethan's side, helping him up as he searched the ground frantically.

"There!" Dr. Vale pointed, and Ethan spotted the orb, just out of reach.

He dove for it, his fingers closing around the cool, smooth surface just as another shadowy figure appeared, grabbing his arm with a vice-like grip.

"Ethan!" Zara shouted, dispatching her opponent and rushing to his aid. But before she could reach him, the hooded figure that had attacked her stepped in her path, blocking her way.

Ethan struggled against the figure holding him, using all his strength to break free. As he twisted and turned, trying to escape, the hood fell back, revealing a familiar face.

It was Mark, one of Ethan's classmates—someone he had never suspected to be involved in any of this. Mark's eyes glinted with malice, a cruel smile playing on his lips as he tightened his grip on Ethan's arm.

"Surprised, Ethan?" Mark sneered. "You really should be more careful about who you trust."

"Mark? How—why?" Ethan stammered, shock and betrayal washing over him.

Mark's smile widened. "I've been watching you for a while now. The Shadow King made me an offer I couldn't refuse. And now, I'm going to deliver the artifact to him personally."

Ethan's heart sank as he realized the extent of the betrayal. Mark had been working for the Shadow King all along, and now he was trying to steal the artifact right from under their noses.

Zara, still locked in combat with the other figure, managed to land a powerful blow, sending her opponent sprawling. She turned to Ethan, her eyes blazing with determination. "Don't let him take it, Ethan!"

Ethan gritted his teeth, channeling all his strength and focus into a single, desperate move. He twisted his body, wrenching his arm free from Mark's grip, and slammed the orb into the ground. The artifact flared with a brilliant light, sending a shockwave through the air that knocked Mark off his feet.

The light engulfed the clearing, and when it faded, Mark and his accomplice were gone—fled into the shadows. Ethan collapsed to the ground, exhausted but relieved. The artifact was still in his hands, safe for now.

Dr. Vale rushed to his side, her face pale with worry. "Ethan, are you okay?"

Ethan nodded, though his body ached from the struggle. "I'm fine. But Mark... I can't believe he betrayed us."

Zara sheathed her weapon, her expression hard and unreadable. "We've dealt with the immediate threat, but this changes everything. If Mark was working for the Shadow King, there's no telling how much he knows about us—and our plans."

Ethan's mind raced as he considered the implications. Mark had been close enough to learn their secrets, to sabotage their efforts from within. And now he was out there, likely reporting back to the Shadow King.

"We need to move quickly," Dr. Vale said, her voice firm. "There's no telling when they'll strike again."

As they crossed the portal back into the real world, Ethan couldn't shake the feeling of dread that hung over him. The battle against the Shadow King had just taken a dark turn, and the stakes were higher than ever. The artifact was safe for now, but the betrayal had left a wound that would take time to heal.

And with every passing moment, the Shadow King's power grew stronger. Ethan knew that the road ahead would be filled with even greater challenges—but he was determined to see it through, no matter the cost.
