Ethan's heart pounded as he, Zara, and Dr. Vale stared down the Shadow King. The malevolent energy radiating from the dark figure was overwhelming, filling the cavernous throne room with a suffocating presence. The Shadow King's eyes burned with an otherworldly light, and his form seemed to shift and waver as if he was both there and not.

"Now!" Zara shouted, breaking the tension. She sprang into action, launching herself toward the Shadow King with her blades flashing. Her movements were a blur, each strike aimed with deadly precision. The Shadow King raised a hand, and shadows coiled around him like living armor, blocking her attacks with ease.

As Zara engaged the Shadow King, Ethan and Dr. Vale began their own assault. Dr. Vale pulled out a small device and activated it, sending out a pulse that disrupted the shadows, weakening the King's defenses. Ethan, holding the artifact tightly, focused on channeling its power. He could feel it responding to him, its energy merging with his own.

"Ethan, now's the time!" Dr. Vale urged, her voice strained as she struggled to maintain the pulse.

Ethan nodded and stepped forward, raising the artifact high. The room seemed to darken further as the artifact absorbed the surrounding light, glowing brighter with each passing second. The Shadow King's attention snapped to Ethan, his eyes narrowing.

"You think you can defeat me with that trinket?" the Shadow King sneered. He waved a hand, and tendrils of shadow shot toward Ethan.

But Ethan was ready. He thrust the artifact forward, and a wave of pure, blinding light erupted from it, cutting through the shadows and striking the Shadow King. The force of the blast sent the King staggering back, his form flickering as the light burned through his defenses.

Zara seized the opportunity, driving one of her blades into the Shadow King's chest. He roared in pain, the sound reverberating through the chamber like a thunderclap. But even as he was wounded, the King retaliated, sending a wave of dark energy that knocked Zara across the room.

Ethan felt a surge of panic as Zara hit the wall and slumped to the ground, dazed. He turned back to the Shadow King, who was already recovering, his form solidifying once more. Ethan knew they were running out of time—the longer the battle dragged on, the stronger the Shadow King would become.

Dr. Vale, sensing the urgency, moved to Zara's side, trying to revive her. "Ethan, we need to end this now!"

Ethan could feel the artifact pulsating in his hands, its power growing unstable. He realized that to truly defeat the Shadow King, he would have to fully merge his own energy with the artifact's. It was a risky move—one that could destroy him along with the Shadow King—but it was their only chance.

Taking a deep breath, Ethan focused all his energy on the artifact. He felt the power within him surge, mingling with the artifact's light until they were one and the same. The energy flowed through him, pure and overwhelming, until he could barely contain it.

The Shadow King, sensing the impending threat, unleashed a final barrage of shadowy tendrils, each one aimed directly at Ethan. But Ethan didn't flinch. With a shout, he released the full power of the artifact, sending a beam of blinding light straight toward the Shadow King.

The light pierced the darkness, tearing through the King's defenses and striking him in the heart. The Shadow King screamed, his form disintegrating as the light consumed him until there was nothing left but echoes and shadowy wisps that dissipated into the air.

For a moment, the room was silent, the oppressive darkness lifting as the Shadow King's presence vanished. The fortress itself seemed to tremble as if reacting to the loss of its master.

Ethan dropped to his knees, drained and exhausted, the artifact's glow fading as its power was spent. Dr. Vale rushed to his side, helping him to his feet. "Ethan, are you okay?"

He nodded weakly, his body trembling. "I'm... I'm fine. Is it over?"

Dr. Vale looked around, her gaze cautious. "I think so. But we need to get out of here. The fortress—it's collapsing."

Ethan looked to Zara, who was slowly getting back on her feet, wincing from her injuries. "Zara, can you walk?"

Zara gritted her teeth and nodded. "I'll manage. Let's go."

Together, the three of them made their way through the crumbling corridors of the fortress, dodging falling debris and navigating the twisting pathways. The Shadow Realm itself seemed to be destabilizing, the walls of the fortress warping and shifting as they hurried toward the exit.

As they neared the portal, Ethan glanced back at the throne room one last time. The place that had once been the source of so much fear and darkness was now crumbling into nothingness, swallowed by the very shadows it had once controlled.

They crossed through the portal just as the fortress collapsed entirely, emerging back into the real world, breathless and shaken. The night air was cool, and the stars above seemed to shine brighter than ever as if celebrating their victory.

Ethan looked at Dr. Vale and Zara, his heart swelling with gratitude and relief. "We did it. It's over."

Dr. Vale smiled, though her eyes held a hint of sadness. "For now. But the Shadow Realm will always be there, and so will its dangers."

Zara nodded, sheathing her blades. "And so will we. To protect our world and theirs."

Ethan took a deep breath, feeling the weight of their words. The battle was over, but the journey was far from complete. The Shadow Realm was still out there, and it would always be a part of him—a responsibility he could never fully leave behind.

As they made their way back to the lab, Ethan knew that his life had changed forever. But for the first time since all this had begun, he felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, with his friends by his side and the knowledge that, together, they could overcome even the darkest of shadows.
