Ethan Blackwood sat at the kitchen table, the dim light of the late afternoon casting long shadows across the room. His mother was busy stirring a pot on the stove, her movements slow and deliberate, as if she was lost in thought. Ethan's mind was elsewhere, too—back in the Shadow Realm, back to the chilling encounters with the Shadow Wraiths, and the revelation of the Shadow King's impending rise.

He hadn't told his mother anything about the Shadow Realm or the powers he'd accidentally acquired. She thought he was just a regular teenager, albeit one with a penchant for science. But after everything he'd been through, he knew he couldn't keep her in the dark any longer. Not when the stakes were this high.

"Mom," Ethan began, his voice tentative.

His mother turned to him, a soft smile on her face. "Yes, Ethan?"

He hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to even start the conversation. "I... I found something. Something about Grandpa."

The mention of his grandfather made his mother pause, her expression tightening slightly. "What do you mean?"

"I found his lab," Ethan said, deciding to dive straight in. "I've been working on some of his experiments, and... well, something happened."

His mother's brow furrowed. She set the spoon down and walked over to the table, sitting across from him. "Ethan, your grandfather was a brilliant man, but his work was dangerous. We agreed as a family not to touch his things after he passed."

"I know, I know," Ethan replied quickly. "But I didn't mean to find it. It just... happened. And now, there's something I need to tell you. Something you need to know."

His mother's eyes searched his face, concern etched into every line. "What is it?"

Ethan took a deep breath. "I have powers, Mom. I can shift between our world and another dimension—a place called the Shadow Realm."

The words hung in the air, and for a moment, Ethan feared his mother would laugh, dismiss it as a joke or a product of his overactive imagination. But instead, she looked at him with an expression he couldn't quite read—half fear, half something else.

"The Shadow Realm," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Ethan, what have you done?"

Ethan blinked, surprised by her reaction. "You know about it?"

His mother looked away, staring out the window as if searching for answers in the fading light. "Your grandfather... he was obsessed with the Shadow Realm. He spent his entire life studying it, trying to understand it. But it wasn't just science to him. It was something more, something... personal."

"Personal?" Ethan echoed, his mind racing. "What do you mean?"

She sighed, her shoulders slumping slightly. "Your grandfather didn't just study the Shadow Realm, Ethan. He had a connection to it—a connection that cost him dearly."

Ethan felt a chill run down his spine. "What kind of connection?"

His mother turned back to him, her eyes filled with a deep sadness. "Your grandfather was the first in our family to discover the Shadow Realm. He was drawn to it, fascinated by its power. But as he delved deeper, he realized that the realm wasn't just another dimension—it was a mirror of our world, a place where the darkest parts of ourselves could manifest. And those manifestations... they could cross over."

Ethan's mind flashed back to the Shadow Wraiths, to the way they seemed to be drawn to him. "The Wraiths," he muttered. "They're connected to us, aren't they?"

His mother nodded. "Yes. The Wraiths are born from the shadows of our souls, the parts of ourselves we try to hide or deny. Your grandfather believed that the more he interacted with the Shadow Realm, the more it began to reflect his own darkness. And eventually, that darkness took form."

"Is that why Grandpa disappeared?" Ethan asked, the pieces of the puzzle starting to fall into place.

"He didn't disappear," his mother said, her voice breaking slightly. "He was consumed. The darkness he had awakened in the Shadow Realm became too powerful. He tried to fight it, but in the end... it took him."

Ethan felt his heart sink. He had always thought of his grandfather as a brilliant but eccentric scientist, someone who pushed the boundaries of what was possible. But now, he realized that his grandfather had been fighting a battle far more dangerous than he had ever imagined.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Ethan asked, his voice tinged with hurt.

His mother reached across the table, taking his hand in hers. "I wanted to protect you, Ethan. I didn't want you to be drawn into the same darkness that consumed your grandfather. That's why I tried to keep you away from his work, from the lab. But it seems... fate had other plans."

Ethan squeezed her hand, feeling a newfound sense of resolve. "I'm not going to let what happened to Grandpa happen to me, Mom. I'm going to stop the Shadow King, and I'm going to protect our world from the Shadow Realm."

His mother looked at him, her eyes filled with both pride and fear. "You're so much like your grandfather, Ethan. But remember, you don't have to do this alone. You have people who care about you, who want to help you. Don't shut them out."

Ethan nodded, the weight of his newfound responsibilities settling on his shoulders. He knew the road ahead would be dangerous, that the darkness he was facing was unlike anything he had ever encountered. But he also knew that he wasn't alone—and that gave him the strength he needed to keep going.

As the last rays of sunlight faded, plunging the room into twilight, Ethan felt a renewed sense of purpose. The secrets of his family's past were finally out in the open, and with that knowledge, he could face the future—whatever it held.

The Shadow King was rising, but Ethan Blackwood was ready.
