It was a week later and we were all crowded into my parent’s house for Deacon’s going away party. Mum had cried three times in the last twenty minutes. Dad and Mark are outback manning the BBQ. Deacon and Jace are also outback playing football in the backyard and I was sipping apple juice in the kitchen listening to Jace's and my mother’s ramble on about how they just want Deacon to stay. Mitch and Becca were late as usual. They had called five minutes ago saying they’d be here soon.
Two minutes later and Becca and Mitch pushed their way into the room, Becca carrying a bottle of wine and Mitch carrying a freezer bag. Becca kissed both the Mum’s then came and gave me a massive hug.
“Have you told them?” she whispered in my ear. I shook my head and smiled. She nodded and turned to Mitch. “Babe, can you take the food out to Dad since they are already cooking”
He kissed her cheek and went outside onto the deck, kissing mum, Delinda, and my cheeks on the way out.
“So honey, how are you and Jace going?” Mum asked smiling.
“Great, we’re practically living with each other at the moment. This weeks been better Deacon has stopped bringing random girls into the apartment at random hours of the night” I said the last part due to Deacon coming through the door. He ruffles my hair and takes the donut I was eating out of my hand and puts it in his mouth.
I whack his arm with my hand and give him my sourest look. He grins, mouth full of donut and kisses my cheek spreading crumbs, jam and cream all over my face.
“Gross, D” I groan. I scrunch up my face and I see a flash as someone takes a photo of us. I turn my head to the culprit and find Jace holding a camera looking smug.
“Cute” he said moving over and licking the mess from my cheek.
“I hate you” I muttered as he kissed my lips lightly.
“Sure, sure!” he replied wickedly then pulled away. I blushed as I noticed everyone watching us with amused expressions.
We sat and talked while the Dad’s finished cooking and then all the women started moving all the salads and bread out onto the table out on the back deck. I noticed Mitch sitting by himself over in a corner and bit my lip then moved over to sit next to him.
“Hey” I said as I sat down.
“Uh hey” he replied not looking at me. We sat in silence for a few moments before I snapped.
“Okay you need to quit it!” I told him. “Jace and I are in love and that’s not going to change any time soon! So man the fuck up and grow some balls, because seriously this shit is not good for me” I said it so fast I was breathless. I shut my eyes and waited.
“I’m happy for you guys, I am. It’s just a little weird how you guys were always fighting and you never said anything.” He muttered still looking at the floor.
“Mitch, I’m going to tell you something and you’re going to get grossed out okay but it’s going to hopefully help you understand.” I said he looked up a weird expression on his face half scared half curious. “It’s called sexual tension okay, we were constantly fighting because it was either that or we were going to jump each other in front of everyone!”
Mitch looked disgusted but then nodded and leant in for a hug. “Okay, I love you sis, but if he hurts you, I will kill him”
“Deacon said the same thing!” I laughed. He pulled back and left an arm around my shoulder. “I’ve got to tell me something and you can’t get mad, you have to promise me”
He stayed still for a moment and then nodded. “Okay I promise I won’t get mad”
I paused and then looked up at him. “Um, I’m pregnant” I closed my eyes and waited.
“Seriously?” he asked quietly.
I turned and open my eyes to look at him. He had tears in his eyes and was smiling. I nodded and he hugged me.
“You’re going to be an uncle, Mitch” I said a little too loudly. Suddenly I was in a wave of people, my mother asking me questions and giggling happily with Delinda. I managed to get a glimpse of Jace and see him looking terrified standing next to my dad. My dad had his hand clasped tightly on Jace’s shoulder, his expression anything but friendly.
After that the questions continued to come until it was late in the night. We had moved to the lounge room and all had managed to get a seat, we were watching Deacon’s favourite movie, Armageddon with Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck. I was leaning back against Jace, practically sitting in his lap. His breath was hot on my neck. Towards the end of the movie I began drifting off to sleep. I was lightly woken up by Jace’s voice in my ear telling me it was time to go. We hugged and kissed everyone and waited for Deacon said goodbye for an extra amount of time.
I got into Jace’s SUV and we watched as my mother hung onto Deacon for dear life. A single tear escaped and slowly ran down my cheek as I watched my dad, the man who hated hugging, grip Deacon in a massive bear hug. After saying his goodbyes he ran over to our car and hoped in the back seat. I watched him smiled sadly as we drove away looking out the back window until we turned the corner at the end of the street and his childhood home disappeared from view.
It was five am and Deacon was due at the airport at half past. We’d been up the last few hours helping him pack up some of his things. He was in his uniform now and I could see his hands shaking and he was starting to get fidgety.
“Hey you’re going to be fine, this time next year you’re going to be babysitting my kids so Jace and I can go away by ourselves. I promise” I kissed his cheek and hugged him tight. He nodded against my neck and pulled away straightening himself.
We got in the car and drove to the airport, both Jace and I walked him to the terminal. I felt tears pouring down my face as he double checked if he had his ticket. He noticed and walked over to me wiping the tears from my eyes.
“I love you, sis!” he said his voice cracking. “You tell those kids about their awesome Uncle Deacon, won’t you”
“Hey now don’t you talk like this is our final goodbye. You’re coming back even if I have to get my pregnant ass on a plane and come get you myself” I said smiling. He kissed my forehead and then turned to Jace.
“You take care of her Jason, she’s my other half and if you hurt her, God won’t even be able to help you” he said with a chuckle. Jace grinned and pulled him in for a hug.
“I’ve got to go” Deacon said smiling sadly.
“I’ll see you when you get home” I told him he nodded and hugged us quickly then proceeded to walk towards the check in. I watched as my twin brother disappeared from sight and I couldn’t help but wonder if that would be the last time I ever saw him.
