I shut off my alarm clock and rolled back over, burying my face in my pillow. "Weston, wake up!" My mom yelled to me from down the stairs. "Breakfast is made!" She continued. "5 more minutes, mom, please!" I begged. It was far too early to be getting up and out of bed. "Weston Daniels, I'm not gonna ask you again!" She yelled back. I sat up in bed and groaned. You don't wanna disobey my mom. Mel and I have learned that over the years. Today was the first day of my senior year in high school. One more year and I could be done with it all. I was excited, but also sad. I wouldn't have to do it anymore, but all the memories I made and friends I had would be gone once I received that piece of paper at the end of all of it. I was scared too. I'm just a kid still, and entering the real world was terrifying to me. I reached into my dresser and grabbed an outfit, throwing it on and not caring much about how I looked. I walked across the hall to Melanie's room, which was right at the top of the steps. I knocked before going in, to let Mel know someone was entering. "C'mon Melanie, it's your first year of high school today. You have to get up." I said. "Hey Wessy," She replied with that stupid nickname she came up with, "do we have to go to school today?" She finished, still wrapped up in her blanket. "I'm not exactly looking forward to mom's wrath if we don't, Mel." She groaned, just like I had, and sat up in bed. "Get out of my room and let me put some clothes on." She requested. "Alright, be downstairs in 5 minutes," I replied, "we really don't wanna be late on the first day." We both chuckled. I made my way to the bathroom and grabbed my toothbrush. Then, I grabbed the toothpaste and squirted out enough to be the size of a pea. I wet the brush and began to brush my teeth, making a face. I've always hated the taste of toothpaste. When I was done brushing my teeth I started down the stairs and into the kitchen. I smelled the air. "Mom's famous?" I asked. "Well of course, it's a tradition for the first day of school," Mom answered. Mom's famous is a culmination of different breakfast foods like pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, and hash browns mixed with sugar and syrup. This may sound gross to some of you, but trust me it tastes amazing. I made my plate and then sat at the table, indulging in my meal. "Your food is always the best, mama," I said with my mouth full. "First of all, you weren't raised in a barn. Finish your food before talking. Second, I know, thank you." She said with a smile. Just then, Melanie came down the stairs. She looked like she got hit by a bus. "Someone's having a rough morning." Mom said jokingly, chuckling. "I loathe school. I always will." Melanie replied back. She, too, let out a chuckle. "Are you ready for high school?" Mom asked Mel after she sat down. "I just hope it's better than middle school was." Melanie stated. All 3 of us laughed. "Good luck with that," I told her. "I couldn't be more excited to get out of that place." Melanie smiled. "Reassuring, big bro. Real reassuring." She continued to eat her food. Dad then entered the kitchen, walking over to his wife and kissing her on the cheek. "Good morning, everybody." Dad said with a smile. "What's got you in such a good mood?" Melanie and I asked in unison. "I am about to embark on a journey to Washington state." Dad answered. "I'll miss Oregon while I'm gone, but Seattle will certainly be exciting." He explained. "My boss is sending me and 5 others on a business trip to Seattle to expand the company. It's exciting." He was smiling from ear to ear. Dad loved it when someone asked him about his job. He grabbed a plate and put some food on it, then he wrapped it in foil. "See you, everyone! I love you guys. Good luck with high school, Melanie. Weston, have a good senior year. I love you Jules!" Just like that, Dad was out the door. "Well, I think it's time you and I leave too, Mel. You can't be late, first impressions matter." I said. "Hey, it's on you and your driving to make sure I'm not late." She replied. We both laughed. "Love you, Mom!" We both yelled walking out the door. "Love you kids! Be safe!" She yelled back. We made our way to my car and got inside. I turned the key and turned the car on before reversing out of the driveway. Mel was the dj while I drove. "Melanie, are you excited for high school?" I asked "Yes, but nervous. It's a new experience." She replied. I told her things would be okay and to just listen to the rules and pay attention to teachers. I pulled into the student parking lot and shut off the car. I showed Melanie how to get inside and directed her to her homeroom. I wished her luck and gave her a hug and definitely embarrassed her before heading to my own class. "Hello everybody! I'm Mrs. Quentin..." I already began to drift off. The first day was always boring.
