Melanie and I were on our own now. When we returned home, which was now under my ownership through inheritance, it didn't feel the same. We had no mom to run to hug. We had no father to wish well for work. We had only us. These last few days at home have been so rough. There have been sleepless nights, and Melanie and I have barely spoken to each other. It was 3 in the morning. I was on my phone and looking at different jobs. Someone would need to keep a house over our heads, and Melanie was just starting adolescence. I found a job for a supermarket, and they had a website to apply. I filled out my information and answered all of the questions. When I was finished I wandered my way to Melanie's room and peaked inside. She was fast asleep. I closed her door and crept down the stairs. I made my way to my car and started the engine. I pulled out of the driveway and drove to Lindsay's house. When I got there, I knocked on her bedroom window, which was ground level. She opened it, and I crawled through. "I see you got my message." She said. "We have to be quiet, everyone is asleep. If we get caught they'll kill us." She was very blunt when she said this. She pulled me in for a hug. "I'm so glad you're okay." She said. I felt tears drip off of her face and down onto my clothes. I hugged her back and held her tight. "I'm so sorry, Weston. Your parents were amazing people." She said. "You never even met them." My tone was harsher than I meant it. "Sorry, I didn't mean it like that. It's just hard. Everyone expects me to just keep going. Both of my parents are gone. I should be, too. This isn't something that just breezes by, you know?" Who was I kidding? Of course she didn't. She hadn't been in a car accident. She didn't lose her parents in a matter of months. She had no idea what it was like. "I don't know, Weston. What I do know, though, is that I'll be here for you, like I am now. It's crazy to say it, but I love you. I genuinely love you." Her hug got tighter before she pulled away. She stared into my eyes for a few minutes, not saying a word. Then she pulled me in, and my lips met hers. She pulled back away. "You should go now. I'll see you tomorrow." She said, almost sounding sorry. "Lindsay?" I say. "Yeah?" She replies. "I love you, too." I made my way to her window and crawled back out. I made my way to my car and then from there made my way home. I crawled into my bed. I was out within a few minutes. I got no more than an hour and a half before I was awoken by my alarm. I shut it off and sat up, rubbing the grogginess out of my eyes. I got up and jumped in the shower. After that I brushed my teeth and put on some clothes. I went over to Melanie's room and woke her up. "Good morning, sleepy head." I said, trying to sound happy. "Ugh." Melanie let out a groan. "I don't wanna go to school today." She says. "Me neither, Melanie, but we've already missed more days than we should've since the accident. Get up." I reply as I shake her. "Fine. Get out of my room, though." She said. Her sleepiness had her grumpy. I went downstairs and cooked one of the only things I knew how to make, which was eggs and bacon. Melanie came into the kitchen with her hair in a towel. "That smells good, Wessy." She says as she smiles at me. "Thanks, Mel." I reply, smiling back.
