Severus,

How are you son? Everything is all quiet here, almost depressingly so. With Lily at school and Petunia dating that Dursley boy, we have the house to ourselves for the first time in years. Not sure I like it. Rosemary says it's "Empty Nest Syndrome" or some such, but I just think it's something I'll have to get used to. Speaking of that Dursley lad, I can't say that I care for him, though Rosie insists there's nothing wrong with him. While I have to agree that he is polite and seems to be a hard worker, I can't shake my dislike of him, but he makes Petunia happy, so I'll keep my peace for now. While we're on the topic of relationships, have you found anyone of interest? If so I'd love to hear about him. Oh, don't act so shocked Severus, you've never shown interest in any lass and I've caught you eyeing Dr. Cullen those times you came to pick Lily up from Barts. Just in case that wasn't clear enough, I'll say it in a way my words will be unable to be misinterpreted or second guessed. Severus, I don't care who you're interested in or who you choose to love. As long as that person respects you and treats you right, I couldn't give a damn to what's hiding in their trousers. We'll come back to this conversation another time as I'm sure you've had your fill of it, but we will continue it when it's necessary lad. On a different note, it's good hearing that you have decided to pursue further education. You have always had exceptional potential and I was afraid your experiences would keep you from realizing just how far you could go. I can't tell you how proud of you I felt when I received your last missive. I spent the rest of that day unable to keep the smile off my face. I can't wait to hear about your classes and the discoveries you will make. You'll revolutionize the field of potions, I'm certain of it and I find myself anxious to see the positive impact your talents will inspire.

With love,

Severus,

I was heartened to hear of your knew friends. I'm aware that making friends was never easy for you and to finally see you able to connect with your peers is a relief. I was honestly worried about you being isolated like you were in our community and Hogwarts. Lily might not have been specific in just how badly you were treated, but I know you Severus. I have, since you were barely at my hip. I love my daughter, but I also know her. Lily can be shortsighted and even selfish when she believes she's been wronged. She sometimes doesn't take in the circumstances around her and is unforgiving when the person lashes out. While I only know the side Lily told me, I know you well enough and you don't just lash out like that Severus. Especially, at Lily. I'm not saying what you did was right, but considering the circumstances I don't believe Lily should have treated you in such a deplorable way afterwards. Letting you be bullied, calling you names, isolating you, and then freely admitting it in my house all the while saying 'it serves him right!'. That's not the daughter I raised. Even if you hadn't been friends before hand I expected better from Lily. Don't let what happened with my daughter keep you from opening up and trusting your new friends to be there for you. I had hoped going to Hogwarts would have give you sanctuary from your home life, but every year I could see you growing more bitter. I wish I could have done something myself, but I had no authority and I hope you'll forgive me for my inaction in the past. Knowing that you have someone, besides yourself, to rely on has lifted a weight off my shoulders.

With love,

Severus,

I apologize for the late letter. I misplaced the one I had originally wrote, so I had to wait till the following day to post it. I must say, I'm very pleased to hear about the progress you're making in your Masteries. When you wrote to me about just how much material you had to go through for your classes, I was a little worried you had bitten off more then you could chew. I should have known better. I'm also glad to hear that despite the work load, your new friends are making sure you're having fun and getting out into the world, learning new things beyond the pages of your textbooks. I can tell you are sceptical son and wondering what you could possibly learn from the world, all I have to say is this. It is often by looking around and outside of our own perception that people discover. Discover flaws, perfection, individuality, and destruction. Beauty and horror. The world is a realm of treasures that you only have to reach out and grab. Inspiration is never found within ones own self Severus. It can only be found in the beyond of what we know.
