Rodrick Heffley had always been a guy who lived in the moment, rarely looking back. But today was different. As he sat in his cluttered bedroom, looking at the clothes him mom laid out for him and gazing out the window, he found himself deep in thought. His mind kept circling back to a moment from the past—a conversation he should have had with you, his best friend, who was now no longer in his life.
The memory was vivid: it was a rainy afternoon a few years ago, and you and Rodrick had been hanging out in his garage, just like you did on countless other days. The two of you had been inseparable since childhood, sharing secrets, laughter, and dreams. But this particular day was different. Rodrick had felt something shift inside him, a realization that his feelings for you had grown beyond friendship. Yet, he hadn't said anything, letting the moment slip away.
Rodrick sighed, looking under his bed and picking up an old photo album from the dirty floor. Flipping through the pages, he saw snapshots of the two of you: at birthday parties, on adventures, and in countless candid moments. Each picture was a reminder of the bond you shared but also of what might have been if he'd spoken up that day.
The door to his room creaked open, and he found himself staring at the empty space where you used to stand. He could almost hear your voice, asking him what was wrong. But that was a question you would never ask again.
He remembered your laugh, your smile, and the way you'd looked at him with those bright eyes that had always made his heart race. But instead of confessing his feelings, he'd just joked around, pretending everything was normal. Now, years later, he found himself wondering how different things might have been if he'd taken the chance.
He picked up his phone and scrolled through old messages, hoping to find a trace of the times you'd shared. Every text, every call, was a reminder of how your lives had diverged. The silence that followed your departure had been deafening.
Rodrick felt a pang of regret. He had so many unanswered questions. What if he'd told you how he felt? Would you still be a part of his life? Would things have turned out differently if he'd been brave enough to speak up?
With a sigh, he put down his phone and looked back at the photo album. "What if?" he whispered to the empty room. "What if I had just said something?"
As he sat there, surrounded by memories, he realized that the past couldn't be changed. The regrets and the what-ifs would always be there, but they were part of a journey he couldn't alter.
Rodrick closed the photo album and sat down on his bed, crumbling the freshly ironed clothes for tonight. He laughed knowing his mom would probably yell at him for it later but he didn't mind. He thought about how you used to be his biggest cheerleader, always encouraging him even when he was unsure of himself. And while the pain of losing you lingered, he found solace in the memories of your friendship.
He felt his eyes water, what if he had just said something. Maybe the chapters of his life had taken unexpected turns, and maybe he had missed out on something special. But as he cried, he began to understand that the moments shared and the bond you'd once had were irreplaceable.
Rodrick took a deep breath and let the tears flow out of him him, 'it was okay to cry sometimes', that's what you always said to him. Finding a bittersweet comfort in thinking of your voice. Even if you were no longer in his life, the memories of your friendship would always hold a special place in his heart. And though he might still wonder about the what-ifs, he knew that the experiences you shared had shaped him in ways he would never forget.
