I sped toward the docks as that was where Jason said he was but I found only an empty lot. Was this Vincent's final act? Making me suffer never knowing what would happen to Chase? But as I lost hope and began to lose it, a car pulled up and I saw the headlights flash on a being at the edge near the water. It was Chase as his feet were placed in ropes as well as his hands and his mouth was covered with tape as his eyes were also concealed. My window was rolled down as I heard the men who left the car's conversation.
"Do you think he'll feel it?"
"I think so you knucklehead. He'll feel the water rushing deep in his lungs. Every second getting harder and harder to breathe then suddenly he'll not be able to hold his breath any longer and sink like a rock."
The other man laughed at his fate as I found it sickening. Looking through my car for anything I could use, I found only pepper spray and a tire jack as well as a roadside assistance card. I decided to call the police and gave them the address before they agreed to come in discretion. I took a deep breath before exiting my vehicle and keeping the pepper spray close to my chest. I kept to the shadows as I made my way closer before seeing them.
"Do you have any last words?" One of the goons asked before I realized the taller one had been Earon.
"Can you give someone a message?" Chase asked as he looked up. I saw his face was mangled and his arms were scratched and his lip was busted but he still spoke through the unimaginable pain.
"I guess..." Earon said with a smile.
"Tell Adelaide I love her. That I dreamed of giving her the world although she deserved someone who could truly buy it for her. Tell her I wanted to dress her in white and make a promise before God and all those we loved and make her my wife. Tell her that I'm sorry I let her down and wasn't strong enough to be there for her. And most of all, I want to tell you to go burn in hell."
Chase was spit on before one of the men angled his seat back and Chase fidgeted in his seat before I saw a car approach the lot. I noticed it had been a police car and felt instant relief. But as I sat there sighing, I saw there had been cement blocks behind Chase and also saw another lookout atop a building before trying to warn the officer. He spoke something into his microphone before requesting backup.
"We have a cobalt light!" The lookout said as gunfire began going off and suddenly I saw Chase be pushed into the water below. I became terrified before a spotlight came onto me. I saw Earon as he took me by the throat as me came near me.
"I knew you would get in my way one way or another...You are so damn annoying. With your supposed innocence. Nauseating. Now I have the green light to finally rid you. Hallelujah!" He placed the gun to my head before everything flashed before me. Pictures, mental videos, moments, embraces, kisses, speeches, words. Each moment spent with both Vincent and Chase, the good and the bad, the terrifying and the present moment. The firsts and lasts, the possible outcomes. It rang through my head like a string of bad commercials and then it hit me. An epiphany inspired by any great soap opera or dramatic television show.
"What about his child?" I asked to Earon who cocked his head.
"What?"
"Vincent's child, the one I'm carrying...what will he do if I'm dead..."
Earon began pacing before turning to discuss things with the other man and when he came back to me, I sprayed him with the pepper spray before looking to the edge of the water and seeing bubbles on the surface. I begged Chase to hold onto the oxygen he could before picking up the gun dropped by Earon and pointing it at him. My finger shook on the trigger before I remembered Lisa's brother teaching me how to use one while hunting deep in the woods one year. An occasion in which I was thankful she had a brother...
"You won't use it...You don't know how..."
"That's where you're wrong." I shot him in the leg before the other man came after me in which I shot him in the chest, he collapsed on the ground before I pointed the gun to Earon. "Call my bluff again and you're next."
"What's that? You have no back up and have to choose between me and your lover quite soon. It's between letting me go or saving him...." I became frantic. Each second was crucial. I knew there was only one thing to do. Trust and have faith. I threw the gun deep in the water before leaping in and making my way to the bottom, feeling the chair and tearing the eye blinder from his eyes and stuffing it around his face, tying it so he didn't get anymore water in his lungs. Making him cease breathing for the time being before bringing him to the surface.
I was dreading making it to the top but found a gun against me. A gun held by a law enforcement officer who assisted me with Chase. The woman gave him mouth to mouth as she tore the binds from his wrists. I was desperate as tears poured down my face. I was anxious as I saw him be hauled in an ambulance and taken to the hospital. And yet I sat in another waiting room waiting the fate of another person I loved, caused by the person I loathed.
