He had a vague idea of where they were as the street corner sign was behind the reporter and revealed a big chunk of where they hid. He had made it to that corner only a few minutes and hid in the shadows to observe the group up ahead.
"I'm sorry for your loss sir," The reporter was saying as he handed his microphone to the cameraman. "I hope they find your son."
"Thank you," the father muttered as he turned back to his sons. "Come on you two, let's go. Shadow, I want to talk to you."
"Y-yes sir," the older kid mumbled as he looked down and followed his father, his brother took hold of his hand trying to stay close to him as they went into their house. Once the coast was clear Mephiles flew to the window and watched in shocked horror as the father began to beat up his son with no remorse.
"You stupid !%@# he could kill us all for calling him out that way!" He yelled angrily. His other son cowered in the corner covering his ears trying to block out the noise of his brother's screams. Mephiles had had enough at that point as a strange feeling overwhelmed him and he shot a blast of his power at the father who stopped moving and fell unconscious on the floor nearly laying on his son.
In the silence Mephiles could hear the sobs of both kids as they stared at their father who had been pushed into a nightmare. He broke the window and flew in his menacing form scaring both kids so much that they ran to shield each other. "Now that's a great way to make me angry." Mephiles growled as he stared eerily at the two. "I give you one chance only, come with me or live with this abuse and never see your brother again."
The one called Shadow looked up slowly as the stranger's eyes fixated on him, he cringed a bit but stood up holding his brother in his arms. "Did you kill them?" he asked as he cocked his head to the side his ears flopping in the same direction.
"No." Mephiles growled deeply as his hand tightened into a fist as his patience fell apart. "But if you so desire I will kill this treacherous low life to ensure he don't come after you again."
Shadow turned his gaze to his father but quickly looked away and took the stranger's hand allowing himself to be pulled away from the pain of the past. "I don't care." he whimpered as he held tight to Mephiles' arm. A dark chuckle came from the stranger's throat as he pushed the two closer to the window, he then pulled his nightmare away from the father allowing him to wake up.
"Plug your ears and turn away or you'll regret what you see." Mephiles told the two who quickly obeyed him and hid themselves in the drapes where they put their hands to their ears and closed their eyes.
"W-who are you and how dare you attack us and intrude on my private property!?" The father hissed as he stood up and backed away from the approaching villain. "Get out of here before I call the police!"
"Oh, I'm your worst nightmare punk. Besides those who torture and abuse their own hoglets don't deserve to live." Mephiles chortled evilly as he reached out to grab the guy by the throat. He then took his pleasured winnings as he cherished every scream before dropping the lifeless form on the ground in its own pool of blood. With an evil chuckle he turned and took the two hoglets in his arms shielding their eyes from the gruesome site. He then flew back to the hideout as the hoglets clung to his chest fur for the security they desired.
Once they arrived at the hideout Mephiles landed next to the couch and pulled his powers out of the sleeping babies who both woke up rubbing their eyes and yawning. Sonic looked around and upon seeing Mephiles he squealed in delight, "Dada!" He exclaimed with a giggle before noticing the two hoglets who clung to the villain. "Buda?"
At hearing that one word Shadow looked behind him to see his little brother sitting there, a questioning look on his face. "Maurice?!" He then jumped off Mephiles and rushed to Sonic who giggled and reached up to him. Their brother looked over to them but refused to let go of Mephiles who inwardly growled in impatience at being clung onto.
"So what are your names, nicknames, ages, and preferences?" He asked through a breath of clarity.
"Oh, well," Shadow turned back to him and put a hand on his chest. "My name is Lawrance but my nickname is Shadow since that's what I've turned into, and I'm thirteen. My brother there is five, his name is Phineas but his nickname is Silver since he never revealed his powers and his fur color reminded our parents of the wealth they hoped to gain. And his name is Maurice, he never got a nickname because he had never gained powers and was the least liked by our father."
The last part was said as he pointed at Sonic who clapped his hands with a smile before trying to climb off the couch. Mephiles watched silently as the hoglet fell on his bottom with a grunt before struggling to his feet and waddling over to Shadow. His older brother was surprised but hid it well as he picked up Sonic and hugged him close. A low growl came from Mephiles who quickly turned around as he pried the third hoglet off his chest and set him on the floor.
"Have you eaten breakfast yet?" He asked as he ruffled his dark quills. Shadow shook his head as he watched the villain lift a hand that was covered in a purplish mist. Mephiles materialized a couple plates on the coffee table with pancakes and syrup on them, the two hoglets looked at the food then back to the adult who silently took Sonic and began to change the dirty diaper.
"Thank you sir," Shadow gratified as he took hold of a fork and pulled a plate to himself before digging in as if he hadn't eaten in days. Silver began to eat too but refused to say anything as he held his little bear close to himself.
Mephiles nodded as he allowed Sonic to struggle back to his feet, the little hoglet then began to stride about a hand in his mouth and his chest puffed out with the pride of being able to walk on his own. The sight of such cuteness made him gag a bit before he got up and went to lift Miles into his arms.
"What is the baby kit's name?" Shadow asked suddenly, the sticky syrup clinging to his fur.
"Miles. And I've named your brother Sonic," Mephiles answered quietly as he began to change the kit's diaper. "I will call you all by your nicknames from now on, and your real names will have to stay a secret to the rest of the world."
Shadow nodded and turned back to eating, his mind at rest for the first time in years. His brothers were safe; they were away from their abusive father and didn't have to worry about the pains of their past.
