Chapter 11: all falls down

The next day Mephiles had cleaned up the kids best he could before a knock sounded at the door. Shadow and Silver stood near the couch while Sonic played with a stuffed alligator, and Mephiles held Miles who didn't like being left alone. "Hello brother," The villain cordially greeted as an older hedgehog entered the house. "Nice of you to drop by so soon."

The new hedgehog was a bit taller than his little brother and had blue quills and fur, he basically looked like Sonic if the hoglet was grown. The only difference being his eyes were a darker green and a brown bandana was tied around his neck while a tuft of white fluffy fur on his chest.

"Well, I see you gathered an interesting group of misfits," He chortled, earning a glare from Mephiles who walked past him after closing the door. "Hey, any idea why the fox hasn't opened his eyes yet?"

"Oh he's just a slow developer is all. Now their names in age order are, Shadow, Silver, Sonic, and Miles." Mephiles explained quickly his ears twitching ever so slightly. "Kids, this is my older brother Fleetway."

"It's nice to meet you sir," Shadow bowed quietly before shaking hands with the blue hedgehog.

"Unca?" A small voice asked from behind and Fleetway turned to see Sonic standing there with his hands clasped behind his back. "Fakoo."

"Sonic! Don't upset him" Mephiles exclaimed as he stepped forward only to be waved off by his brother.

"It's ok Meph, I don't mind. As long's he calls me something to get my attention. Now Sonic, you and your brothers need to have a good place to retaliate just in case the bad guys come to get your daddy." Fleetway knelt down and ruffled the hoglet's fur making the little guy giggle.

"Nu uh," Sonic then backed up as he shook his head. "We ba guy."

"Well technically I'd say mentally challenged, but whatever, now I need you to help your brother Shadow lead the group into the woods and stay there until it's safe when the time comes. If anyone tries to attack...um...well what can you do?"

In answer Sonic quickly ran laps around him before stopping in his original spot where he crossed his hands over his chest. Just then another knock sounded at the door and soon turned to excessive pounding. "They've found us." Mephiles growled before handing Miles to Shadow who pulled his brothers into a corner in hopes they didn't have to run.

The door was knocked down and a swarm of police officers flew in with their guns raised. "Mephiles the Dark, you are under arrest for murder and kidnapping." One of them informed as he folded his wings and aimed the gun at the villain.

"Hey I never kidnapped anyone! I only rescued those kids from bad situations!" Mephiles growled as he raised his hands in emphasis.

"Ya he's right our parents were very abusive." Shadow offered but was silenced by Fleetway who cleared his throat and stepped forward.

"You boys better leave now, those kids are safer here than anywhere else. And I won't let you take away the only thing that's been keeping the peace around here." He walked in between his brother and the guns as he itched his quills before forcing a gun down with the tip of his finger. "Besides, I don't think you want a massacre on your hands."

"But sir, he's the bad guy, and he's keeping those kids in inhumane conditions. Who knows when he'll attack us again, if you don't help then you'll be arrested too." One of the other police officer's chided before pointing his gun at the blue hedgehog.

"Now why would I help the villain? No; I'm just trying to keep you boys from destroying this city." Fleetway commented but was silenced by a gun pressed into his throat. Knowing there was no other way Mephiles quietly motioned for the kids to run. Shadow quickly grabbed Silver by the hand and turned to run out the back door while Sonic ran ahead using his ability.

When the two year old got to the back door though he saw more officers who were blocking the path. An angered scream from behind him jolted his mind into the memories of the bullies from his past as he felt his anger rise with a shiver up his spine to his head. Power seemed to fill him as he growled and picked up speed before his fur changed color and his growl gained an eerie echo. In a millisecond all the officers were down and he was back to normal but his head pounded as he slowly lost consciousness.

Shadow didn't see what happened, he only saw the downed men as he ran by, pulling Silver along. They ran as fast as they could into the woods where they hid in a cave near the river. Silver curled up in the corner as his brother started to hide the entrance, and Miles sat where he was left, his ears twitching slightly at every sound. "Where's Sonic?" Silver suddenly queried from his corner.

"Oh no," Shadow hit his head with frustration before leaving the cave. "Stay here and take care of Miles, I'll be right back." He then ran back to the house and hid in a bush to watch as the police dragged his adopted father out to one of their squad cars.

"Sir, there's no sign of the kids, and Fleetway disappeared too." one of the officers reported to the chief who seemed in a sour mood.

"You'll never find 'em." Mephiles hissed, his anger unfathomable. "And soon I'll have my revenge on your pathetic crew for ruining my peaceful new life! I will tear you apart limb from limb and scatter your remains to the wind! My wrath will be tenfold from before and there'll be nothing to stop me!"

"Ya, ya whatever, just get in the car." The chief muttered while waving and walking away, "Officers, search everywhere if you have to, but find those kids and bring them to me, and find that turncoat Fleetway."

A shiver ran through Shadow's body as he watched them take away his adopted father when suddenly a hand gripped his shoulder. "You shouldn't be so close, they could pick you off like a fly." An echoey maniacal voice hissed in his ears making him turn around only to see a gold colored hedgehog with red swirly pupils and irises. His teeth had grown jagged and his claws had grown sharp.

"Who are you?" The frightened teen lifted his hands to shield himself as he cowered. His ears pinned back and he snarled, baring his teeth in defense.

"Cool it boy, it's just me, Fleetway. Now let's get going before they spot us." The hedgehog growled lowly before pulling the kid along behind him.

"Wait, Sonic's missing." Shadow whined trying to pull away feeling the pain of the adult's grip.

"Leave it to rest kid, if they don't have him then he's safe and we'll find him later when it's safe!" Fleetway growled before picking up the struggling hedgehog and flying to the cave. Back at the house the doors were locked and the windows were boarded up, but in the corner of the garden where the weeds grew wildest lay Sonic still unconscious, blood running down his head as a bullet had struck him from behind. As the day dragged on a figure appeared next to him and knelt down to pick up the unconscious hoglet and cradle him close before walking away.
