Few years had passed since the grand return of the Pandavas and Kauravas to Hastinapur, and the palace was once again abuzz with activity. This time, the excitement was centred around an upcoming marriage—a union that would strengthen political alliances and secure the power of the Kuru dynasty.
Duryodhana, always strategic in his moves, had arranged a marriage for his only sister, Princess Dushala. The chosen groom was none other than King Jayadratha of the Sindhu Kingdom, a strong ally and a close friend of Duryodhana. The marriage was more than just a union of two individuals; it was a calculated step to fortify Hastinapura's political standing. Sahadeva - who excelled in astronomy suggested the most auspicious date for the wedding would be fourteen months from today, and the engagement to be held in the upcoming month.
The announcement of the marriage had been met with a mix of emotions in the palace. The elders viewed it as a wise and necessary alliance, while Dushala herself seemed to be swept up in the romantic notions of marrying a powerful and handsome king. The young princess had always been pampered and protected by her brothers, and the idea of stepping into a new life as the queen of a distant kingdom filled her with a sense of excitement and nervous anticipation.
One afternoon, as the sun cast a warm glow over the palace gardens, Samyukta found Dushala sitting by the lotus pond, her expression thoughtful yet tinged with a hint of girlish excitement. The news of the impending marriage had been announced only days ago, and preparations were already underway. Dushala, however, seemed lost in her own world, her gaze fixed on the rippling water.
Samyukta approached her cousin with a gentle smile, taking a seat beside her on the stone bench. "Sister, I've been meaning to ask you," Samyukta began softly, "what do you think about your marriage to King Jayadratha? Are you happy with this arrangement?"
Dushala turned to Samyukta, her eyes brightening at the mention of her future husband. "Oh, Samyukta, I am more than happy," she replied, her voice filled with dreamy excitement. "I've heard so much about King Jayadratha. They say he's not only a strong and capable ruler but also a very handsome man. And he's one of Duryodhana Bhaiya's closest friends. I've always trusted Bhaiya's judgment, and I know he would only choose the best for me."
Samyukta listened with interest, noting the happiness that radiated from Dushala. It was clear that her cousin was fully embracing the idea of this marriage, not just as a duty but as a dream come true. "You're going to be the queen of the Sindhu Kingdom," Samyukta remarked, her tone encouraging. "That's quite an honour, sister. You'll have your own palace, your own court, and the love and respect of your people. I'm sure you'll make a wonderful queen."
Dushala's cheeks flushed with pleasure at the words, and she smiled widely. "I can hardly believe it, Samyukta. I've always imagined what it would be like to be a queen, but now that it's actually happening! It feels like a dream. I'm looking forward to it so much. And I've heard Sindhu is a beautiful kingdom, with vast rivers and lush landscapes. I can't wait to see it all."
Samyukta reached out and took Dushala's hand in hers, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "You'll do wonderfully, Dushala. I'm sure of it. And remember, even though you'll be far away, you'll always have your family's love and support. We'll all be here for you, no matter what."
Dushala's eyes softened at the sentiment, and she leaned in to embrace Samyukta, her voice filled with emotion. "Thank you, Samyukta. That means so much to me. I know I'll miss all of you terribly, but I'm also excited to start this new chapter of my life. I hope to make you all proud."
As they embraced, Samyukta couldn't help but feel a mixture of happiness and sadness. Dushala was like a sister to her, and the thought of her leaving for a distant kingdom tugged at her heart. But she also knew that this marriage was a crucial step in solidifying alliances and ensuring the stability of their family's reign.
