Chapter IV

I lay in my bathtub, letting the water pour out from between my fingers, absent in my thoughts, pondering over the conversations I had an hour ago. I found Lily not in the chambers but in her office. As soon as I got near the door I heard a discussion taking place. The sound was inaudible. From what I could sort out, she was talking to a man.

I extended my hand and pushed the door open, the conversation died down the moment I entered. Lily stood behind her mahogany desk her eyes met mine and she slowly straightened up. "Emory." She greeted. "I bring news Caps." I started. My eyes fell on the person sitting in one of the chairs in front of the desk, his back towards me. He was wearing a hooded cloak, disguising his appearance. "Who is this if I may ask?" I questioned no one in particular. The person stood up slowly from his seat and turned around.

The man stood a head taller than me, his face was still hidden under his hood. It wasn't until he raised his head that I saw his face. A chiseled jaw was first to appear in my line of sight followed by thin parted lips and a straight nose with a slight crookedness, possibly due to it being broken sometime in the past. His eyes were the ones to catch my attention so far. Brown orbs with a hint of golden flecks, held a story of their own. Good looking I guess. His eyes glinted with curiosity as I looked at him quizzically.

"A pleasure to meet you Em. I apologize for the belated introduction, the moon wanes in the velvet night, as Wayne gazes up, his heart alight. Wayne, if you call me would bring me delight." He spoke as if he was reciting poetry with his hand upon his heart and a smile tugging at his lips.

I was taken aback, my eyebrows raised. I didn't particularly appreciate that he called me by my nickname. I was trying to take this in. Poetry for a proem? Well, that's something I don't hear every day. I thought. His words carried a weight of elegance as if he were some aristocrat.

I responded to him with a sickly sweet smile that did not reach my eyes, mimicking his tone as I stepped forward with my hand behind my back, looking up at him "Well- Wayne, it's too early for me to say it's a pleasure to meet you too" My smile becoming tighter by the end as I continued "However I would like to enlighten you, that you can call me Emory." I said pressing on the can so as to leave no way for him object. To which he just smiled, the mischievous glint not disappearing from his eyes.

"Oh you soon will Em" He replied a smug look on his face. My smile dropped and I pulled back. Annoyance bubbled in me, not liking his little rebelliousness. I snapped my neck towards Lily who looked at this whole incident with amused eyes while still keeping a straight face. I looked at Lily expecting a proper introduction because I was not content with just a name.

Lily cleared her throat and answered my unspoken question. "Em, this is Wayne, as you have succeeded in your new mission. I have another task that is waiting for you. Now I hope you two get along well, for the reason that you will be partnering up together for the new undertaking at hand." She spoke in such an asserting tone I could not object. No one objects to what Caps says. Never.

But me being myself questioned "And why is it that you have found him for the job whatever that may be?" I asked, glaringly looking him up and down. However, my efforts were in vain as he didn't even bat an eye.

"Emory, since when did you start questioning my commands? I hope to hear no more of this. Whatever discussion needs to be done, we can resume it tomorrow afternoon." She said strongly a hint of a frown on her face. "But-" "No more Emory, now hand me the package before you leave" she finished. My cheeks heated as she scolded me as I was a child, and if it couldn't be any worse, it was in front of that smirking idiot named Wayne. I grabbed the pouch attached to my belt and placed it in Lily's awaiting hands. I struggled to keep my face neutral.

I was rendered speechless my mouth opening and closing like a gaping fish tried. I don't even want to look at the stranger called Wayne, knowing he was muffling a laugh under that cursed hood. Oh For crying out loud! This is going to be one hell of a mission. "Young lady might as well close your mouth before a fly comes in." Said the mouth attached to Wayne's face. I shot a venomous glare towards him which made his smirk fall off, and he looked down at his shoes while clearing his throat. I couldn't deny so I accepted. I stiffly nodded, waiting until this stranger left so I could talk about this with Lily alone.

However, I forgot things can't always go the way I want them to, because as soon as she was done saying she swiftly left the place leaving me dumbfounded. I huffed, turning around and walking away not even glancing at the stranger for some much-needed bath. What a blasted day indeed.
