As if nature had been working on their side, the storm had died down just before sunrise. Divine and Billie hurried across the school's outdoor grounds, reaching the window they'd snuck out of earlier. Divine winced as it creaked open, but she quickly climbed over the ledge, swinging her leg inside.
"When we get in there, we can't make a single sound, alright?" Divine murmured, her eyes darting from left to right as she scoped out the area to ensure the coast was clear. The bottom lobby of the boarding school was silent and empty, just as it usually was during these early hours.
She turned back to the window, leaning over to help Billie in. Gripping Billie's waist, Divine guided her as she climbed inside. Billie wrapped her arms around Divine's neck, letting her maneuver her with ease. Once Billie was safely on the carpet, Divine carefully shut the window and turned to face her.
"Walk in front of me. I'll tell you where to step," Divine whispered in Billie's ear. Billie's skin prickled with goosebumps at the warmth of Divine's breath, and she nodded slowly, stepping ahead. Suddenly, Divine's head snapped around at the sound of clanging keys.
Without hesitation, Divine yanked Billie back against her, pressing them both into the shadow of a nearby beam. Billie let out a soft gasp, but Divine quickly brought her hand up to cover Billie's mouth.
"Shut up."
Divine's eyes scanned the room, searching for the source of the noise. When she realized it was only the old cafeteria lady with her trolley, probably getting ready for breakfast, she relaxed, releasing Billie. Billie exhaled in relief, stepping out from behind the beam.
They watched as the wrinkled woman pushed open a heavy door and disappeared into the large, stainless steel cafeteria.
"We have to run to the stairs, okay?" Divine instructed.
Billie nodded, turning her head to glance back at Divine. "How do you do this every night? Jesus," she whispered.
Divine giggled. "Well, first of all, it's not every night. And I'm usually on my own, so I don't have to worry about another body." She tapped Billie's shoulder, indicating that the coast was clear. "Run."
They sprinted down the hall, their footsteps muffled against the carpet and wood. Once they reached the staircase, Divine, without warning, scooped Billie into her arms, carrying her bridal-style.
"Divine!" Billie gasped, but Divine quickly shushed her.
"I know every creak on this stairway, alright? Don't make a sound."
Billie nodded, her eyes wide as she clung to Divine's neck. "Okay..."
Divine navigated the stairs with precision, shifting from side to side, careful to avoid any potential creaks. Billie tightened her grip around Divine's neck, watching the floor anxiously.
"How the fuck did you carry me so easily?" Billie muttered.
Divine shrugged with a smirk. "You're not heavy. You're really short, actually."
Billie rolled her eyes and lightly smacked the back of Divine's head. "Oh, shut up."
Divine giggled, shaking her head as they reached the last step. She set Billie down gently in front of her, then pressed her smaller frame against her, gripping billie's waist.
"I'll show you where to step, and you do exactly that, understand?"
Billie nodded, grabbing onto Divine's arms as they wrapped around her waist. Divine guided Billie carefully, avoiding every creak. The first rays of the sun began to spill through the tall, tinted windows brightening the gothic halls, and Divine quickened her pace, urging Billie forward.
