The streets of Shanghai were a blur of neon lights and bustling crowds, but all I could focus on was getting to Ethan. Davian had him, and time was running out. The intel we had gathered led me to a nondescript building on the outskirts of the city—a place that, to most, looked abandoned. But I knew better. Inside those walls, Ethan was fighting for his life.
As I approached the building, I kept to the shadows, my senses on high alert. The night was thick with tension, every rustle of leaves or distant shout setting my nerves on edge. I slipped past the guards, my movements silent, my eyes scanning for any sign of Ethan. I couldn't afford to be caught, not now.
Inside, the air was stifling, the dim lighting casting long shadows. I moved through the narrow corridors, my heart pounding in my chest. Finally, I found him. Ethan was strapped to a chair in a small, windowless room, his face bruised, his eyes closed. My breath caught in my throat. He looked so vulnerable, so unlike the man I knew.
"Ethan," I whispered, rushing to his side. His eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, relief washed over his features.
"Alex," he rasped, his voice weak. "You have to get out of here. It's a trap."
"I'm not leaving without you," I said firmly, my hands working to free him. But before I could finish, a voice echoed through the room.
"Going somewhere?"
I spun around to see Davian standing in the doorway, a smug smile on his face. He was holding a small remote, his finger hovering over the button. My heart sank. I knew what that device was, what it could do.
"You didn't think it would be that easy, did you?" Davian taunted, his eyes glinting with malice. He pressed the button, and Ethan gasped, his body tensing as pain shot through him. I watched in horror as he struggled, the micro-explosive in his head sending waves of agony through his body.
"Stop!" I shouted, my voice breaking. "What do you want, Davian?"
"What I've always wanted," he replied coolly. "The Rabbit's Foot. Hand it over, and maybe I'll consider letting him live."
The Rabbit's Foot. The mysterious object that had set this entire nightmare in motion. I knew we couldn't just hand it over, couldn't let a man like Davian have that kind of power. But as I looked at Ethan, saw the pain etched across his face, I felt my resolve waver.
"I don't have it," I said, my voice shaking. "But I can get it. Just stop hurting him."
Davian raised an eyebrow, clearly amused by my desperation. "You think I believe that? You're not in a position to negotiate, Alex. I hold all the cards here."
I felt a surge of helplessness, a feeling I hated more than anything. I glanced at Ethan, his eyes meeting mine, filled with a silent plea. I knew what he wanted me to do, what he was silently begging me for. To get out, to save myself. But I couldn't. I wouldn't.
"What do you want me to do?" I asked, my voice steadying.
Davian's smile widened. "You'll come with me," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "And you'll help me get the Rabbit's Foot. Or your friend here dies, and then Julia."
I felt a chill run down my spine at the mention of Julia. Ethan's fiancée, the woman who had no idea what kind of world Ethan truly lived in. She was innocent, and Davian was using her as leverage. It made my blood boil.
"Fine," I said, my voice hardening. "I'll help you. But you let Ethan go."
Davian laughed, a cold, harsh sound. "Oh, no. He stays with me. Consider it... insurance."
I clenched my fists, fury bubbling inside me. But I had no choice. I had to play along, at least for now. I needed to find a way to save Ethan, to get us both out of this alive. I took a deep breath, forcing myself to stay calm.
"Alright," I said, meeting Davian's gaze. "Let's go."
As Davian's men led us out of the room, I cast one last glance at Ethan, his face pale, his eyes filled with pain. I had to believe that I could save him, that we could find a way out of this. But as we stepped into the cold night air, I felt the weight of the impossible choice ahead. Save Ethan, or stop Davian. The line between right and wrong was blurring, and I was running out of time to make things right.
