The walk back to the apartment was silent, but not uncomfortable. There was a tentative understanding between them now, a fragile thread of hope that neither wanted to break. Gojo’s eyes stayed on Geto the entire time, as if he couldn’t bear to look away, afraid that if he did, Geto would disappear again.
When they reached the door of the apartment, the familiar sight of their old home brought a flood of emotions rushing back. This place had once been filled with warmth, love, and shared memories. Now, it felt like a haunted space, filled with echoes of what they had lost.
Geto hesitated at the door, his hand trembling as he reached for the key. Gojo noticed, stepping closer to place a reassuring hand on his back. "It’s okay," he whispered, his voice gentle. "We’ll make it okay again."
Geto nodded, though he couldn’t hide the fear in his eyes. They stepped inside, the silence of the apartment pressing in on them. It was exactly as Geto had left it, but somehow, it felt different—emptier, colder.
They stood in the middle of the living room, both unsure of what to do next. The weight of everything unsaid hung in the air between them, heavy and suffocating. Geto’s shoulders started to shake, and Gojo could see him trying to hold it together, trying not to break.
But then, Geto’s control slipped. His knees gave out, and he crumpled to the floor, his hands covering his face as sobs tore through him. "I’m scared, Satoru," Geto cried, his voice muffled by his hands. "I’m so scared it’ll happen again… that I’ll be left alone, waiting for you to come home, waiting for something that will never come."
The sight of Geto breaking down, of him being so vulnerable and hurt, shattered Gojo’s heart into a million pieces. He had always prided himself on being strong, on being able to handle anything, but this… this was unbearable. He couldn’t stand to see Geto like this, couldn’t bear the knowledge that he was the cause of this pain.
Gojo dropped to his knees beside Geto, wrapping his arms around him and pulling him close. "I’m so sorry, Suguru," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I’m so, so sorry for everything I’ve put you through. I was selfish, and I took you for granted. But I swear to you, it will never happen again. I’ll never let you feel like this again. I promise you that."
Geto clung to him, his body shaking with the force of his sobs. The sound of Geto crying so desperately tore through Gojo, each sob a knife to his heart. He held Geto tighter, rocking him gently, trying to soothe him, to take away some of the pain.
Slowly, after what felt like an eternity, Geto’s sobs began to quiet, his breaths coming in shaky gasps. His grip on Gojo loosened, and Gojo could feel the exhaustion settling into Geto’s body. He could feel Geto’s weight growing heavier in his arms, his breath evening out as the emotional release took its toll.
Gojo looked down and saw that Geto had fallen asleep in his arms, his tear-streaked face pressed against Gojo’s chest. There was a peace in Geto’s expression now, a calmness that hadn’t been there before. Gojo’s heart ached at the sight, but there was also a flicker of warmth—this was a part of Geto he had lost, but now, he had found it again.
Carefully, Gojo stood, cradling Geto in his arms as he carried him to the bedroom. He laid Geto down on the bed, tucking him in with the gentleness of someone handling the most precious thing in the world. Geto stirred slightly, but didn’t wake, his breathing deep and even.
Gojo climbed into bed beside him, wrapping his arms around Geto once more, pulling him close. He pressed a soft kiss to Geto’s forehead, the warmth of Geto’s body against his own filling him with a sense of peace he hadn’t felt in so long.
As he lay there, listening to the sound of Geto’s steady breathing, Gojo felt the weight of everything begin to lift. It wasn’t gone—not by a long shot—but it was lighter. He had a long way to go to make things right, but for now, just being here, holding Geto, was enough.
Gradually, the exhaustion of the past weeks caught up with him. The adrenaline that had been fueling him finally drained away, leaving him heavy and drowsy. His eyes began to close, and he tightened his hold on Geto, as if to reassure himself that he was really there.
Before sleep claimed him, Gojo whispered one last promise into the quiet of the night, a vow to himself and to Geto. "I won’t let you go again, Suguru. Never again."
And with Geto safe in his arms, Gojo finally allowed himself to drift into sleep, the sound of their steady breathing the only sound in the room. The pain wasn’t gone, but for the first time in a long time, there was hope. And with that hope, Gojo knew they could find their way back to each other.
