Part 2It was a chilly evening, the air thick with the weight of approaching winter. Megumi shivered as he made his way home, huddling deeper into his jacket. He’d stayed late at the library, and now he was on a path he usually tried to avoid at night—a dark, narrow alley that was notorious for trouble. But tonight, he didn’t have much of a choice.
As he stepped further down the street, he began to sense that he wasn’t alone. The hairs on the back of his neck prickled, and his pace quickened. But just as he started to make out a group of men in the shadows, a pair of hands grabbed him, and before he knew it, he was surrounded. Megumi tried to twist free, but someone struck him hard from behind, and everything went black.
For what felt like an eternity, he floated in a painful, half-conscious haze, his senses blurred. His vision was dark, and his body felt paralyzed, but he could feel hands gripping him, rough voices jeering and laughing, talking about him in vile ways. Megumi's panic rose, his heart pounding as he struggled to move, to break free. But he was trapped, his fear rising as he imagined what would happen if no one came to stop them.
Just as he felt the last thread of his control slipping away, a voice cut through the darkness—a familiar, low, rasping voice that made the men around him go silent.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
Megumi's heart seized, recognizing that voice. Sukuna. Even in his haze, the relief that came with it was overwhelming.
“Get lost, man,” one of the thugs growled, but Sukuna didn’t budge. His voice dropped to an icy snarl.
“You heard me. Let him go. Or do you need me to rearrange your faces first?”
He couldn’t see what happened, but from the footsteps hurrying away, Megumi knew Sukuna had sent the men scrambling. Moments later, he felt strong, steady hands pulling him up, easing him back to consciousness. As he came to, the panic faded, replaced by the grounding sensation of Sukuna’s hands on his shoulders, holding him up.
“Megumi,” Sukuna said, voice softer now but still rough. “Can you hear me?”
Megumi’s vision finally cleared. Sukuna was staring down at him, his brow furrowed with a look of genuine concern he’d never expected to see.
“Yeah… I’m okay,” he whispered, his voice shaky. He could feel himself trembling, both from the adrenaline and the cold. Sukuna noticed and, without a word, shrugged off his hoodie, draping it over Megumi’s shoulders.
“Here,” he said gruffly, guiding Megumi to lean on him. “I’ll get you home. Just don’t pass out on me.”
As they made their way down the quiet streets, Megumi felt strangely safe, leaning against Sukuna. His exhaustion kept him silent, but when they finally reached his door, he turned to Sukuna with a steady look of gratitude.
“Thanks… really. I don’t know what would’ve happened if you hadn’t been there.”
Sukuna shrugged, brushing off the sentiment. “I just happened to be passing by. Don’t read too much into it.”
But Megumi didn’t miss the way Sukuna glanced away, almost as if he were uncomfortable with the thanks. He couldn’t help but feel indebted and offered, “Is there anything I can do to thank you?”
Sukuna considered him for a moment, a mischievous glint flickering in his eye. “You serious?” he asked, and when Megumi nodded, he smirked. “Then give me your number.”
Megumi blinked, surprised. He’d expected Sukuna to ask for something…well, something else. But a number?
“Fine,” he said, handing over his phone to let Sukuna punch in his number. Sukuna took it with a lazy grin, tapping quickly before handing it back. Megumi watched him, still a little wary, but there was a sincerity in Sukuna’s actions tonight that surprised him.
“Take care of yourself,” Sukuna said before he turned and left, disappearing into the shadows. As he watched him go, Megumi felt a strange mix of confusion and curiosity. Maybe there was more to Sukuna than he’d thought.
When Sukuna finally got home, Yuji was still awake, waiting in the living room with a look of mild panic.
“Sukuna! Where have you been?” Yuji asked, worry clear in his voice. “I was starting to think you were… I dunno…in trouble or something!”
Sukuna rolled his eyes. “Relax, brat. I just had some stuff to take care of.”
Yuji frowned but didn’t press, giving him a skeptical look as Sukuna brushed past him to head upstairs. “Whatever. Goodnight, then, Mr. Mysterious. It’s the holidays anyway; I’m staying up!”
Sukuna was already halfway up the stairs, giving his brother a dismissive wave. But once he got to his room, he found himself pulling out his phone. To his surprise, Megumi had already sent a message:
[11:45 PM] Megumi: You get home safe too?
Sukuna raised an eyebrow, smirking at his screen. He hadn’t expected Megumi to reach out first, but he liked that he did.
[11:46 PM] Sukuna: Didn’t think you’d care. But yeah, I’m home.
There was a pause before Megumi responded, almost as if he were debating whether to reply.
[11:47 PM] Megumi: I mean, you saved me. I owe you at least a text back.
[11:47 PM] Sukuna: Good to know I made an impression.
Sukuna stretched out on his bed, resting his head against the wall as he continued typing.
[11:48 PM] Sukuna: Those guys didn’t hurt you, right?
[11:49 PM] Megumi: No, I’m okay. Just…shaken up, I guess. Thanks to you, though, they didn’t get the chance.
Sukuna felt a small surge of satisfaction reading that. The idea that he’d kept Megumi safe, that Megumi actually trusted him enough to feel comfortable texting him, made something stir in him—a rare feeling of pride.
[11:50 PM] Sukuna: Maybe I’ll have to start patrolling that street. Keep trouble away.
[11:51 PM] Megumi: Or you could just tell me which streets to avoid next time.
Sukuna chuckled, typing quickly.
[11:52 PM] Sukuna: Why not let me be your bodyguard?
[11:52 PM] Megumi: Only if you’re free. No way I’m calling you just to walk me home.
[11:53 PM] Sukuna: You might want to start thinking about it.
[11:53 PM] Megumi: We’ll see.
They continued like that, teasing each other, the conversation flowing surprisingly easily. Sukuna found himself relaxing in a way he hadn’t in a long time, caught off guard by Megumi’s wit and the way he could keep up with Sukuna’s sarcasm.
From Megumi’s side, he lay in bed, his heart still racing from the night’s events. He hadn’t expected Sukuna to be the one to save him, let alone end up chatting with him into the early hours of the morning. Sukuna’s responses were more genuine than he expected, showing glimpses of a side he hadn’t known existed.
[12:23 AM] Sukuna: So…you think I’m still an arrogant asshole?
Megumi laughed under his breath, feeling more at ease.
[12:23 AM] Megumi: Depends. If you keep your arrogance to yourself, maybe I’ll revise my opinion.
[12:24 AM] Sukuna: You’d like that, wouldn’t you?
[12:25 AM] Megumi: Maybe. I’m just glad you’re not as much of a jerk as I thought.
Sukuna chuckled to himself, glancing at the clock. He didn’t want the conversation to end, but he sensed Megumi was tired.
[12:26 AM] Sukuna: Get some sleep, Fushiguro. Can’t have you falling asleep in class.
[12:27 AM] Megumi: Same to you. Night, Sukuna.
As he put his phone down, Megumi felt a strange sense of warmth, and for the first time in a long while, he drifted off with a small smile.
