Waking up to hear a window being opened and soft footsteps downstairs was not what Darcy meant when she asked for something to celebrate.
Quickly, Darcy grabbed her machete and jumped up out of bed.
Darcy swiftly moved to the bedroom door and pulled it open gently. Creeping down the hallway Darcy had her machete ready to hit anything that moves.
She crept to the end of the wall and stopped, listening for any indications of someone in the house.
Hearing a creak right behind her she spun around and lifted her machete and aimed only to see a small child with a teddy, she was around 9-12 years old.
Still with her machete raised Darcy asked, "Who are you and what do you want?" She didn't want to scare the girl but it's only common sense to ask.
"My name Sophia, I need to get back to my mum, do you know where she is?" Sophia asked with hope shining in her wide eyes as she steps towards Darcy, which made Darcy take a step back.
"Uh no I don't, sorry."
"Oh ok," Sophia whispered and let her head fall down.
After a minute of Darcy observing Sophia's body language, she made up her mind and said, "I'll help you find her. Is that alright with you Sophia?"
Watching how Sophia whipped her head up with a blinding smile was worth the trouble she will surely go through trying to find Sophia's mother.
"Yes! Thank you," Sophia bounded towards Darcy and swung her arms around her middle in a tight grip. Darcy tensed at the hug, after months of none it felt weird.
As she did that she asked, "What's your name?"
Darcy replied back with, "Darcy, Darcy Hill."
"Ooo that's a pretty name."
Laughing Darcy stepped back from the hug and stated, "Before we go you need a jumper, something to keep you warm at night."
"Ok," Sophia said while nodding her head wildly.
Darcy grabbed Sophia's chin to make her stop just in case she hurt herself.
"Let's go upstairs," Darcy said while motioning to the stairs.
Nodding, Sophia followed Darcy up the stairs and into the bedroom Darcy hadn't slept in.
"This room is the kids' one, I'm sure there will be clothes for both of us."
Darcy opened the door and walked straight to the clothes drawer.
After opening the drawers, she shuffled through them and found a pair of dark blue jeans that would fit Sophia, a light green shirt and a bunch of socks Sophia and Darcy could use.
Turning back to Sophia who had sat on the bed watching Darcy find clothes. Darcy chucked a pair of socks, the jeans and the shirt to Sophia, "Put them on."
"Ok," Sophia nodded and got up to change.
Turning away Darcy made her way to the sliding closet door and opened it to find three jumpers and some flannelettes. Darcy grabbed the best jumpers and two flannelettes.
Looking for anything else in the closet Darcy found an old school bag that would be perfect for Sophia.
After grabbing it and stuffing one of the jumpers and flannelettes into it she asked Sophia, "Are you done changing?"
"Yeah," Darcy heard back.
Darcy turned around and looked over Sophia and nodded satisfied with her new clothes, they were a little big but that only allowed for growth.
Darcy handed the school bag to Sophia and said, "Here, this will be for you to keep your things and make it easy to carry it around."
"Thank you, Darcy," Sophia smiled and excitedly opened the bag to look at it.
Darcy said to Sophia as she was pulling the clothes out, "The jumper is to keep you warm if it gets cold and the flannelettes are to keep you from getting sunburnt so put one on."
Sophia nodded and put one on.
"Ok, if you want to you can choose a couple of toys from here, the maximum is five and not big ones," Darcy said as she walked to the door and then added, "I'm going to go and look around the other rooms, ok? Call if you need me."
"Thank you!"
