With the heavy bag on her back Darcy made her way to the front door. Passing Sophia, the dog didn't growl but it still tracked her with its eyes.

Going to pull out her machete Darcy remembered the knife she had found for Sophia and turned to her as she swung her bag around and opened it to pull out the knife in its holder.

"Here," Darcy said as she handed it over to Sophia.

"What is it?"

"It's a small knife you can use on variants," Darcy answered her question, "You can clip it onto your jeans, so you have it on you all the time. I would recommend only using it when there is one variant because you're still short, so you'll have trouble defending yourself against multiple, so if there is more than one call for me and run ok?"

"Ok thank you, but what are variants?"

"Oh right, um they're the dead people," Darcy provided.

"Oh, my group calls them walkers," Sophia said.

"Oh ok, do you need help putting the knife on your jeans?"

Sophia moved her head side to side as she clipped it onto her jeans.

"Ok, now let's go," Darcy said as she turned towards the front door and opened the door only to see ten variants on the front porch.

Slamming the door shut when she noticed them walking towards them, "Go to the back door, Now!" Darcy yelled.

They ran through the house as the sound of the door falling off the hinges, she stopped at the back door and looked through the window on it.

Scanning the outside and noticing none she yanked the door open hard as she heard the creaking behind them grow louder and a growl from the dog indicating they were close.

Darcy pushed Sophia through the door with the dog hot on her trail. Darcy also stepped through the door leaving it open in her hurry.

Darcy ran after Sophia and noticed the dog ripping into the head of a variant.

"Maybe she is useful," Darcy whispered.

Catching up to Sophia she yelled, "Don't stop ok."

No response was given and she turned her eyes towards Sophia and noticed her look of fear.

Knowing she can't do anything about it right now she looked back to the front only to notice a sharp incline up ahead.

Smacking her hands in front of Sophia to stop her and she heard a oof from her.

Looking down the edge and then back to the ten variants that had made their way closer.

Pulling her machete out Darcy turned to Sophia and said, "Stay behind me and the dog."

Darcy took her first swing at the first variant and lodged her machete in its head as the dog jumped towards another one and bit into its head capturing two more variant's attention.

When the variant fell Darcy put her foot on its middle and tugged on her blade, with a disgusting sound her machete was pulled free.

Hearing growls from the variants all around her she looked towards Sophia and noticed she had moved to her in fear.

Grabbing Sophia into her arms she noticed movement in the corner of her eye and saw the dog running away with two variants.

Looking down at Sophia she noticed the variants getting closer.

With her machete she swung her machete, Sophia still tucked into her front, at a variant and hit it in the head letting it fall. Pulling the machete out of it head she turned to the next one and did the same only she didn't get the machete back that time.

Panicking, she forgot about the knife she gave Sophia and dropped to the ground with her in her arms and started crying with Sophia.

The growls grew closer as she felt a hand tug at her hair.

Crying out Darcy turned around and grabbed at the variant's arm only to see it would be fruitless as they all surrounded her and Sophia.

Darcy's eyes widened in fear even more when she heard a scream leave Sophia's mouth. Forgetting about the variant holding onto her she turned her head despite the painful pulling and saw two variant's close to biting Sophia arm and neck.

Darcy felt something stir inside of her when she saw that, and she felt as it blasted all the variants away from them.

Closing her eyes in pain she barely heard Sophia yelling her name, she however felt her shaking her.

Her senses came back to her and she opened her eyes. Darcy saw Sophia above her crying, she wondered when she fell onto her back but then she heard Sophia saying, "We have to go, please Darcy wake up."

Finally pulling herself together she shakily pulled herself up from the ground and took a glance around to see two of the variants on the ground and two getting up to pursue them again.

"Yeah, let's go."

Sophia helped Darcy start walking and then once Darcy found her strength they started running again, this time into the woods and away from the variants.

They were soon joined by the dog again.

After running for thirty minutes with adrenaline lacing their bloodstreams they finally slowed to a walk to try and catch their breath.

"It's getting dark, we need a place to sleep," Darcy stated to herself and then added, "we can sleep in a tree for the night."

Sophia didn't argue.
