My ragged clothes stuck uncomfortably to my torn skin as I pushed my way through the trees.
I know what you're wondering.
Who is this dashing adventurer wading through a forest 99.9% populated with what are probably mutated plants and animals and still being completely stylish and cool about it?Definitely not me.
But if I have any idea, it's probably my best friend, sorry, ex-best friend Chika or maybe since we're not close anymore, I should probably call her Oikawa.
And for the record the reason why we're ex-friends is totally on fate not me.So it started on an early afternoon as we made our way through a forest much less deadly than this one with the wind rushing against our faces and adrenaline coursing through our veins as we ran for our fucking lives from the drooling rottening thing chasing us.
The outbreak started 5 hours before this just to be clear.Anyway, so we ran and ran and I was, of course, being left behind and sustaining major injuries and then I figured.
Chika is a way better runner than me. I couldn't run for my life (Literally!) and she had won the interschool state championship. Twice.
So if I could use her to distract the zombie while I got a headstart, she'd probably catch up with me sooner or later since I was that slow. Now that I think about it, I should have probably told her my plan before actually carrying it out, especially since she was participating in it. Granted, that one's on me but I was pretty sure it would work out.
So I shoved her, and down she went.
On the plus side, I made sure to push her into a bed of leaves while very hopefully praying there was nothing poisonous in it.
I ran and ran for a long while before realizing there were no footsteps following so admist my trepidation and cowardice, I went back to look for her.Unsurprisingly, she wasn't there.
Surprisingly, the zombie was dead.On one hand, Yay, Zombie dead. On the other hand, Chika was missing and probably hated me.
And I forgot to mention there was a 50% chance she was dead so yeah, she's my 50% dead ex-best friend. So while Chika is probably being the independent resourceful person she is and figuring out how to gather her supplies and defend herself, I am wading through the forest wondering which fruit's poisonous and which one isn't and probably killing myself in the process.
I finally got my college diploma (well, not really?) and look what happened. I didn't even get to use it.
I sigh again, scowling as a disgusting smell hots my nose.
I can't tell if it's me or the forest.
My nose twitches . It's probably me.There's a rustling in the bushes on my far side and a zombie comes out, sniffing around, probably trying to pick my scent through all this muck.
I'm too drained to feel scared.
And then as I do everytime I face a life or death situation, I started to think.I mean in a year or two, zombies would probably rule the planet with a humans cowering and trying to gather warfare with the little resources they have with the imagination they can beat them while still backstabbing and hurting each other but it's gonna be all about the zombies. They gonna rule this planet without even realizing it.
"Hey unalive." I call calmly.
It turns, its rotten eyes focusing on me. I could tell it couldn't see me though. Zombies depended on their ears and noses.
"You got me. Come over big guy, you deserve it." I wave a hand to beckon it and as it comes forward, I realise it's actually a teenager, her matted hair sticking to the blob of congealed blood on her temple and her veins so vivid, they looked ready to pop out and let's not get started on the claw-like nails.
Ugh."Okay,so you're a little girl. That's cool too. You're like what? 16? Then I should be like 4 years older than you... or something."
She twitches and tilts her head twisting her body in a curiously nauseating way.
"Okay so now you're uh... bone reshuffling. That's... cool... I guess."And then she pounces and I close my eyes, waiting for impact. It never came. What did was a thud from my right.
I turned towards there to see her body which now looked dead, like dead dead. The reason was probably, no, definitely the round hole with singed edges which had definitely not been in her forehead some seconds ago.
Okay... So, that's new. There's something more dangerous than zombies in this forest.
There's something more dangerous than zombies in this forest.
There's something more dangerous than zombies in this forest.
There's something more dangerous than - How the fuck is that even possible?I looked around, panicked.
Should I run? I mean I did want to die a second ago but I'm not sure if this new way's gonna be painful so... to die or not to die.The decision was made for me as something stepped out of the shadows to stand in front of me.
I froze as I recognized itFucking Chika?
"Surprised I didn't die?" She said in this really mean voice that I really wasn't surprised to hear.
I mean, I did leave her in a forest right as a zombie pounced at us.
Technically betrayal.
"Yeah, kinda but hey, you escaped, right? Cool."Like I said before. If anyone would be able to wade through a forest 99.9% populated with what are probably mutated plants and animals and still be completely stylish and cool about it, it would be Chika.
Except she looks more angry than cool right now but that's probably because of me.I sit down on my haunches "Go ahead. Take your revenge."
She blinks, suspicious. "Just like that?"
I shrug. "Yeah, I have literally nothing left to live for."
She grits her teeth. "Is this some kind of joke? Humans everywhere are fighting for their lives and you really expect me to believe you're just giving it away?"I roll my eyes. "I'm not 'Humans everywhere', I'm Y/N and you took my ticket." I gesture to the 'really dead' zombie. "So technically, you have to replace it."
She stares and wipes her face with her surprisingly clean,. smooth and soft looking palm. Someone's taken a bath recently. "You know, I spent all my time figuring, imagining what I would do to you but I forgot how unpredictable you were. I forgot how much I couldn't understand you."I watch her quietly and raise an eyebrow. "Sooo, what's happening now?"
"Now?" She stuffs the laser gun I hadn't realized she was holding back into her pocket."I'm gonna leave you because even if I don't really understand you. I know you well enough to know that you want to die but are too much of a coward to do it yourself and wish to wait until someone else does it. There'd be no pleasure in doing anything now. You want me to. But I know that once I leave here, you'll come back to your senses and won't be so willing to go down placidly. Then little by little, you'll regain your will to live. That's when I'll come back and I'll show you what pain is. Until then, L/N."
And then she disappears back into the shadows. And with her, the mood of death. I sigh,. leaning against the tree.
I really hate how Chika is right sometimes.
But at least, I know she's coming back.
