"I was acting weird and didn't want to explain it to you."

Mondo wasn't paying attention to the girl. He was watching something on his phone, smiling from ear to ear. Willa didn't know what the boy was watching, but she did know one thing: she couldn't back out now. She had gotten herself into this lie with her friend, and she had to finish it. She had to finally tell him what had happened between her and Miles. Mondo deserved to know the truth.
It was still early morning, but despite that, the airport was filling up with people eager to travel or who had just arrived, ready to explore the beauties of Louisiana. The suitcase Willa was dragging beside her rolled over the tiles that covered the airport floor—every suitcase made a sound on those tiles, but to Willa, it felt like hers was the only one making noise. As if her suitcase had turned up the volume. As if it was on the other side, trying to betray her. As if it was trying to draw attention to itself, making Mondo turn and notice her.
Willa was wearing dark blue sweatpants and a dark red T-shirt, but it felt like she was walking through the airport completely naked. She felt as if she weren't wearing any clothes because it seemed to her that everyone was watching her. As if she was walking into a courtroom for interrogation. The closer she got to the boy, the more she wished she could take down the bun she'd hastily tied up that morning so her hair could fall over her face, allowing her to hide. In this vast hall, with nowhere to hide, she felt exposed. She was scared. Afraid that after she told Mondo the truth, he would stop being her friend.
She had to tell him. She was sure of it. Mondo deserved the truth—about her, about Miles, about everything that had happened between her and her ex. She couldn't bear the weight of the lie she had been keeping inside for so long. But as she got closer to Mondo, her resolve began to fade, as if it was getting lost in the crowd around them.
When she was just a few steps away from him, Mondo looked up from his phone and saw her. That wasn't what she wanted. She wanted his attention as late as possible because she was truly nervous about what she was about to do. His smile hadn't faded from his face yet, but Willa saw a flicker of surprise, maybe even concern, in his eyes. "Hey, Willa," he greeted her as soon as he noticed her, as if she hadn't been rude to him after practice. That was what made Mondo so special and amazing—he forgave quickly.
The moment Willa saw his beautiful smile, full of healthy white teeth, she felt all the muscles in her body stiffen. Her determination to tell him the truth suddenly evaporated like mist. All the sentences she had been rehearsing in her head throughout the walk vanished. She stood before him, and everything she had planned to say disappeared as if it had never existed.
"Hi, Mondo," she finally replied softly, almost inaudibly. She felt her voice tremble, but she couldn't stop it.
"I wanted to tell you something..." she began, but her voice faltered. How could she say the words she had been holding back for weeks? All the emotions and fears tied to Miles, to their relationship, to what had happened between them, now seemed like an impenetrable barrier she couldn't break through. She couldn't bring herself to say anything about the long jumper. It was as if her mind was blocking everything she had decided to say about this boy. Or maybe it was because she feared Mondo would judge her once she told him the truth.
