My body didn't react. I forced it not to. I was not going to give this man the satisfaction of seeing me shocked. Instead, I stared at him and watched as his smile slowly started to twitch downward.
"Why don't you... come on in-- Never mind, you've already done that--- have a seat and we can have some coffee?" He offered, gesturing towards a door. I motioned for him to go first.
He chuckled darkly. "Still the same as you always have been Adonis. But last time, and the time before that... God, I could've wet my pants the first time I met you. But look what you've become!" He eyed me up and down. "How old are you?"
What the fuck was wrong with him? The man kept insinuating that he's met before, but I've never seen him. Just like Calanthe.
"Old enough to rule, it seems."
He nodded after contemplating it. "Nineteen?" He guessed. I gritted my teeth. He was getting on my nerves.
I didn't respond. He gave me a knowing nod. "So secretive. Not very talkative. It's always been this way. Except for one time. You were the life of the party! Mildly annoying, but still." The man led us into a room with run down couches and coffee tables and a dimly lit fire.
"You know the nice part of being an immortal? I know about everything. I know the biggest secret of the US--- weirdly not that big of a deal--- I actually met George Washington, not an interesting dude, actually. And, I know what you need to know. But... each question you ask comes with a price. I'll remember how many you ask."
"What do I want to know?" I managed to grit out. I ignored the fact that he said he wanted something in return for my questions.
"Ah, ah, ah," he tsked. "You have to ask the right questions."
"What's your name?" I asked.
"I am Abner Aurelius. Or I am Cormac Caelin," he replied. "I have many names."
"What do you prefer?"
"Your Majesty."
I hissed. "Fuck you."
He raised his hands in mock surrender. "Just kidding. Abner will do. And now, ask away."
This felt like some sort of trick. I knew I should probably keep the questions mild, nothing to big, but nothing to small. If anything, immortality had granted this man the ways of a politician. He could answer my questions with out actually answering them. But he doesn't seem like the type. Maybe the thing I should be worried about was the fact that he wanted something in return.
"Calanthe, what is she?"
"An elf. Though I'm not sure what type," he replied. His tone was honest, but I still felt like I had no reason to trust him.
'That's cause you don't, dumbass,' said Hades. I shrugged mentally at him.
"What type of elf is Calanthe?" I made sure my request was clear, that there was no way he could find a loophole to answering my question. Abner smirked at me. He knew what I was doing.
"She was an Earthblood elf."
"Was an Earthblood Elf? She's something else now isn't she. What did she turn into?" I asked.
"A monster. She turned into a monster," Abner replied. I cursed. I hadn't made my question clear enough. I could guess by myself that Calanthe was a monster. It didn't exactly take brains to know that.
'Please kill him already, he's annoying me,' complained Hades.
"As of right now, Hades, he's useful. As soon as he's not, we can do whatever with him," I snarled back.
