We decided to sit outside in the gardens for our meeting today. The summer air was warm and the soft rustling of the leaves provided a false sense of tranquility—our life is anything but tranquil. My father sat at the head of the table, designated for the don, his posture commanding as always. He looked comfortable and in his element as he has been doing this for almost thirty years. Nico, Cole, and I took our places beside him, our expressions mirroring the same seriousness that my father had taught us to display a long time ago.
At the other end of the table, Lorenzo sat, flanked by his two men—Francesco, his trusted underboss and Raphael, the capo and a man who's cold and lethal demeanor matched Lorenzo's.
I have known both Lorenzo and Francesco for a long time as we attended private school together during our teenage years. Francesco was always known as a jokester, more playful and lighthearted than Lorenzo. However, I've seen Francesco get mad once or twice and he was anything but playful. Lorenzo, on the other hand, has never cracked a smile in his life. He was one of the deadliest men in the world, and that's not just a rumor–that's a fact. He became the youngest don in our history and that was due to his own hands. I was pretty afraid of him, but I also respected the hell out of him–although, I would never tell him either of those things.
As much as I respected him, I still can't fully trust him as he is one of our rivals. He may not be our enemy, but in our world, that can change pretty quickly. Not to mention, I do not like the way I caught him mingling with our sister last night and I wasn't sure what he was trying to do, but he isn't going to get any closer to her.
"As mentioned, Diego is giving us a bit of a headache and I believe he is for you as well, Lorenzo," my father began.
Lorenzo leaned back, calm and collected as always–you never knew what he was thinking. "Diego Navarro," he began, his voice as cold as the steel of the blade. "Is a little shit who thinks he knows who he's up against. He can have his little fun for now because when I get to him, there will be nothing left," he said, his words sharp and final.
Francesco chuckled. "We caught him bribing some of our lower ranks into working for him. We dealt with the situation, but Enzo over here is a little salty." He smirked. Lorenzo shot him a glare. If that was anyone else, they would have gotten their face indented.
My father chuckled. "I like the way you think, Mr. De Luca. However, how do you suggest we ruin him? We can't go in guns blazing."
Francesco leaned forward smirking. "We need to hit him where it hurts—his supply lines, his distribution network, and his lieutenants." He counted on his fingers. "Tagliategli la testa e il corpo seguirà." He crossed his arms and leaned back. [translation: cut off his head and the body will follow]
Nico nodded in agreement. "Not a bad idea. He doesn't have much to his name anyways, so it should be easy enough."
I tuned out the conversation for a second to watch Lorenzo as his attention was no longer on the meeting at hand, but on something else. I followed his gaze— my blood rising from seeing who had his attention.
