I don't know how long I've been standing outside, but several people have passed me and waved to me politely, meaning Luke has not yet badmouthed me all over town which I appreciate. Perhaps this conversation I plan to have with him will go smoothly. However, that thought doesn't stop the pounding in my heart. It doesn't stop my hands from shaking. It doesn't stop me from fearing the worst.
In five days, Lucy and I will talk about what we want, but I already know the answer to that. I've known the answer to that since she asked for this break, and I will forever know the answer.
I want Lucy. I will always want Lucy.
I swing open the door to the diner, and the moment I do, all eyes fall on me. Despite visiting several times, I still don't look like I belong in this town.
I stare straight ahead, looking directly at the man behind the counter who is already giving me a hard, rugged expression. I'm the bad guy. I'm the guy that hurt his daughter, and he already warned me that if I were to ever hurt Lucy, he'd make my death slow and torturous── something I definitely deserve after how I treated Lucy.
I suck in a sharp breath and my chest tightens. I step forward, keeping my head high so he can't see that I'm secretly terrified for what he may say to me. Hell, he may throw me out of the diner and not look back, and I think I'd let him.
I always intended to come to Stars Hollow to see Luke, I just needed to do it on a day that Lucy would definitely be busy on. She's busy with some classes today, and while I should be attending my own classes, I'm here instead, hoping that my girlfriend's father will hear me out.
"You know, I knew you'd show up eventually." He crosses his arms over his chest, staring at me in an attempt to intimidate me and scare me off, but I won't back down, not when I need to talk to the one person Lucy trusts most in the world.
"I need to talk to you."
"Well, obviously."
I look over my shoulder, seeing that a few people are looking in our direction. People obviously want something to gossip about, and what better thing to gossip about than the boyfriend of the beloved diner owner's daughter begging for said diner owner's forgiveness.
