It was bedtime when Anna heard a knock at her door and knew the only person who would be knocking at her door at that hour was Harry. He did that a lot before they broke up, when she slept in the patient's room, especially when he had something to drink. She felt suddenly excited. Her heart started beating fast."Give me a minute!"
She rushed to her mirror and brushed the edges of her hair, rubbed her dress down and took a deep breath before opening the door.
"Kelvin!" she exclaimed with a confused smile.
"Good evening," he smiled one hand behind his back.
Anna cleared her throat hoping she didn't look as awkward and disappointed as she felt.
"Good evening," she replied with a strained smile.
"I got these for you from the garden." He moved the hand that was behind forward and presented her with beautiful roses. Red, yellow, and white, "I didn't know which color you like so I got three."
"Thank you." She took them with a smile. "I love all colors, they are beautiful," she added.
"I'm glad you like them." An awkward silence passed between them.
"So, I heard you've only been in your cabin a week."
"Yes, that's true," she answered with a genuine smile.
"Do you like it?"
"Yes, it's wonderful."
Awkward silence again. It was obvious he wanted to be invited in, but she could not, it was late.
"I was just getting ready for bed...."
"Of course," Kelvin said promptly.
"I'm sorry, I want to wake up early tomorrow," she added.
"Me too.... you know .... first day," he said with an embarrassed smile. "Have a good night, Mary I mean Annabel."
"Good night, Kelvin."
She sighed deeply after closing the door. She felt angry at herself for feeling disappointment that it was Kelvin, the man who may truly love her instead of Harry a betrothed man who made it clear that he did not love her.
"I'm a fool," she said softly putting flowers on the table. She took a metal vase and water in a cup. She sat down on the chair next to the table and rubbed her face.
'What's wrong with me' she thought, 'why can't I get Harry out of my head.... Maybe I should give Kelvin a chance, he might be just what I need. The only complication I'd have with Kelvin is if we got together and then sold separately. She sighed and grabbed a rose, then heard a knock again.
"He's back," she murmured and sprung from the chair, rushed to the door and opened it excitedly, this time ready to invite him in.
"You are ba...." She trailed off when she came face to face with Harry and froze.
"I'm sorry were you expecting someone?" Harry asked.
"No....I....aaah." She frowned and shook her head bringing her senses back. "What are you doing here?" she asked.
"I want to talk to you."
"You can't be...."
"Before you say no...." he interrupted, "I understand what you said about not having feelings for me and not wanting to do this," he waved a hand between them, "but I still feel like I owe you an explanation, if you give me a few minutes, I will explain everything," he said his heart racing, he was nervous, she was the only one that made him that nervous and not talking for weeks didn't help. They stared at each other for a moment.
