"Isa, come down and get Zephyr."

I jump on my feet and dash downstairs to the main doors, rushing out to find ma's car parked on the driveway and her standing by it.

"Ma! You both are okay, right?" I ask while stepping closer and opening the passenger side door.

Zephyr's sleeping with his head rolled to the side.

"Yes, baby."

As I bend to unbuckle Zephyr, my eyes land on his wrapped up arm, something red staining it.

Is that blood?

"What happened?" My blood pressure inflames and I turn to ma accusingly. "How could you let him get hurt?!"

"Calm down, Isa. Hunters attacked us."

"What?!" I scream, head feeling heavy the more she spews.

"Nothing happened except Zephyr got a little hurt. The bleeding's stopped. He's fine."

"Did you shift?" Fear and worry palpable from my tone.

Ma sighs, she looks edgy and distraught, and places a comforting hand on my arm.

"I didn't need to. A wolf saved us. Diverted the hunters' attention off of us and I drove back as fast as I could."

"What wolf?" My face scrunches up.

"I dunno." There's this distant glimpse in her eyes and I feel unsettled. "I didn't see them, only the eyes and a scent."

"What scent?"

"Let's talk later. Get Zephyr comfortable first." With that she heads up the stairs back inside the house.

I lift Zephyr up in my arms and carry him to our room and put him on the bed. I clean up his wound and wrap a gauze around it, pressing a gentle kiss on it afterwards.

Why does ma look decrepit about a random wolf saving them? If anything, she should look terrified for being in such dangerous situation.

My heart stutters as I think of how things could've gone horribly wrong, what if Zephyr got hurt badly, or the knife stabbed his stomach or chest, I shudder and quickly climb on the bed, hugging Zephyr tightly to deflate my trepidation.

"I'm sorry for being mad at you."

It's pliable hearing Brielle's words and feeling her presence, it's been really lonely without her.

"It's okay."

"Now I understand why you were so agitated about keeping him close."

I inhale deeply.

"Let's talk to him in cool head tomorrow. He'll understand."

"I will. After the meeting with papa and Jackson, I will talk to him. Maybe even take him out on a date."

"That'd be perfect."

Nuzzling Zephyr's soft, long hair—he really needs a haircut—I hold him close and gradually fall asleep.

Cory seems to be on edge as he paces the room, waiting for his dad to appear and begin the meeting. Well, it's only our families, and Estella since she's the Luna now.

She looks really good, glowing almost. Her perfect platinum blonde hair in a French braid and kind, perceptive eyes so green, she's really pretty, something I never cared to admit because of my petty jealousy.
