Contd From Three Years Ago
Michael spots me and strides toward me in the hotel lobby, where we're holding the settlement negotiations. Trailing behind him is his unsettling brother, Jacob, who had insisted on obtaining copies of Mike's case files.
"Hey. How are you?" Michael asks.
"I should be asking you that. I'm fine," I reply.
Mike smiles and shrugs, but Jacob interjects, "You know, in my experience, when women say they're fine, it usually means they aren't."
I resist the urge to roll my eyes. Thankfully, Mike steps in, "Are Mrs. Williams and her lawyer here?"
I check the time and notice we're almost an hour early. "Well, since we're all here early, let's head into the conference room and discuss the settlement. It's a complicated situation with her."
We head into the room.
"Let me start off by confirming that you, Michael, are willing to settle with her outside the courtroom. And if things go south, you're willing to take it to court." I state.
Mike answers, "I am willing to settle it here but, if it does get taken to the courtroom, I don't want it dragged on for years together. If this hadn't happened, I would be in Central Africa on a humanitarian mission getting new equipment and medicines for those people who live with almost no healthcare"
I continue asking Mike,"Look, Mike, as much as I hate to ask, are you really prepared to give her a million dollars like you said?"
"Yeah, if it comes to it, I will."
