Present

As we're driving home, there's a question that keeps popping into my head, 'What if mom hadn't called Emmy and told her about Richard, would we have eventually made up or would our marriage have ended?'

Even this morning, the only thing we said to each other was that we would both come home late because of work, not knowing what was in store for us. These past few months, I desperately wanted to tell her to stay so that we could talk, and find ourselves again.

Both Emma and I were hurt about what happened, I couldn't speak to anyone but Mike about it. I didn't tell him the entire thing, too. We didn't talk to each other about everything that went down. We just kind of shut ourselves out from each other. I think it was somehow the same way for her, she and I just buried ourselves in work.

Either way, I'm so thankful that this happened.

I'm still holding Emma's hand while driving with my other. We come to a stop at the intersection near our home, the traffic light is red. I look toward Emma who's facing the window, looking at the rain, humming a song while tightly holding my hand. I scramble and take my phone out of my pocket to take a picture of her, looking ethereal in the car. She is everything to me and I would burn the world for. Cliché, but that is how I feel.

The light turns green as I drive to our home, I park the car in the basement while Emma wait for me at the elevator.

I kiss her like I've waited centuries together for her.

Going to our house felt like forever, with the lift stopping at empty floors sometimes. Going to unlock our home was longer than that.

She drags me in as we both leave our shoes, clothes, and things all over the floor. I missed kissing her, I missed how she smelled, how her lips tasted like cherry, how she always made our home smell like flowers. I missed her touch, the way she fit perfectly into my hands.

We lie breathlessly on our bed, the room filled with the scent of flowers and the lingering warmth of our embrace. Emma turned to me, her eyes soft and inviting. "How about a hot shower?" she suggested, her voice a gentle whisper.

I nodded, unable to resist the allure of being close to her. We made our way to the bathroom, the steam from the shower enveloping us as we stepped inside. The hot water cascaded over us, but we couldn't let go of each other. Our hands roamed, our lips met, and the world outside ceased to exist. It was just us, reconnecting in the most intimate way.

The next morning, we clung to each other, reluctant to part even as we got ready for the day. I insisted on dropping Emma off at work, and I was grateful for the extra time together. As we drove through the rain-soaked streets, I never left her hand, a silent promise that we would face whatever came our way together.

When we arrived at my office, she pulled me into a tight hug, neither of us wanting to let go. "I'll see you tonight," she whispered, and my lips brushed against her ear.

I nodded, feeling a renewed sense of connection and strength. "Tonight," I echoed, giving her one last kiss before letting her stepping out of the car. As she walked into the building, I glanced at her, a small smile on my face.

I go into my office and greet Lilian, handing her a coffee, "Hey Lilian, Good Morning! Here's a coffee for you and everyone here."

She stares at me with shock, which she quickly covers up, but then eyes me as though I committed a sin.

"Sir," she starts, "Are you happy about the loss we garnered with Tavern & Co. or are you high on some drug?"

I burst into laughter but immediately stop, I wouldn't want to be known as the happy-go-lucky CEO of Pendragon Capital, would I? "No, Lilian, I'm definitely not happy about losing money, but I am happy about something else, I'm only human. Now, let's get back to work, shall we?"

She stares at me for the next five seconds or so and then slowly exits to her cubicle outside my office and then stares at me from there again.
