Very Long Chapter.. :)

Contd from Three Years Ago.

Mike, Nora and I went to their hospital a few days ago to speak to the staff who were present on that unfortunate day. I gathered the staff and explained the importance of their testimonies. "In court, listen carefully, answer honestly, and stick to what you know," I told them. "Stay calm, even if the plaintiff's lawyers try to confuse you. Review your notes and be consistent. Our lawyers will support you during cross-examination. We're in this together, and your honesty will make a difference. And please, I don't want to pressure you, but if this case gets messed up, Dr. Pendragon could end up losing his license. Thank you, all!"

It was the day of the trial. Ever since Mrs. Williams stood up and walked out of the negotiation, Mike has been in a daze. I called out his name thrice, and his brother had to grab his shoulder to get his attention in yesterday's meeting.

I arrived at the courthouse early, the morning air crisp and filled with anticipation. As I passed through security, I spotted Eleanor waiting in a quiet corner of the lobby. Her face showed a mix of anxiety and determination. I approached her with a reassuring smile. "Nora, how are you holding up?" I asked gently.

She took a deep breath and nodded. "I'm managing, Emmy. Just a bit nervous."

"That's completely understandable," I said, giving her arm a comforting squeeze. "We'll get through this together."

Just then, Jacob and Mike walked in, accompanied by another person who I assumed was the lawyer Jacob had brought along, just in case I 'fuck up'. Their expressions were serious, but they both gave us a nod of acknowledgment. I waved them over. "Let's go over the last-minute details," I said, leading them to a private room. We needed to ensure everyone was prepared and confident before stepping into the courtroom. This was our moment to present the truth and defend Mike's reputation.

We went over the testimonials and the list of the people who will testify in a private room. I gave reassurances and encouragement along with the hospital lawyers to the hospital staff that'll be testifying. I was summoned to the Judge's chambers just as I was wrapping up.

Before heading to the judge's chambers, I took a moment to reassure Mike. "This trial will go well, Mike. Just stay calm and stick to the facts, and it'll be good if you show emotion. Don't hold it in," I said, giving him a confident yet assuring nod. Turning to Jacob and Eleanor, I explained the importance of their testimonials. "Eleanor, your testimony will be crucial. Jacob, you might have to testify as well. It's better if you do because you know Mike better than anyone. Your support could make a significant difference." They both nod as Jacob's lawyer silently sits.

With that, I left them to prepare and made my way to the judge's chambers. As I entered, I saw Mrs. Williams' lawyer, Arthur Smith, already seated. He looked up and gave a curt nod. I approached him, extending my hand. "Arthur, good to see you," I said, trying to keep my tone professional yet cordial. He shook my hand firmly. "Emma," he replied, his expression unreadable. We both knew the gravity of the situation, and this brief exchange was just the calm before the storm.

Judge Clayton let us in and took a seat behind her desk, "Good Morning," she greeted us. "Before we proceed, I want to confirm a few things. Have both parties held a settlement negotiation?"

Arthur and I exchanged a glance before I spoke up. "Yes, Your Honor, we attempted to reach a settlement, but unfortunately, we couldn't come to an agreement."

The judge nodded, her expression serious. "I see. Are you both certain you want to move forward with the trial? This is a significant step, and I want to ensure that all avenues for resolution have been thoroughly explored."

Arthur responded first. "Your Honor, my client is resolute in seeking justice through the court. We believe a trial is necessary."

I continued, "We believe that presenting the facts in court is the best way to resolve this issue, Your Honor."

The judge sighed slightly, then nodded. "Very well. Let's proceed with the understanding that this trial will be conducted with the utmost professionalism and respect for all parties involved. I expect both sides to maintain decorum and focus on the facts."

Arthur and I both agreed. The judge then addressed a final point. "Lastly, I want to emphasize the importance of clarity and brevity in your arguments. The jury needs to understand the facts without being overwhelmed by legal jargon."

With that, the judge concluded the meeting. "Thank you both. We'll reconvene in the courtroom shortly."

Arthur and I exchanged a brief, respectful nod before leaving the chambers. The stage was set, and the trial was about to begin.
