"Davey? Davey, I think that's the bell..." Jack groaned, struggling to blink the sleepiness out of his eyes.
"I was here all night? Oh, my parents might be worried." David sat up, starting to panic. "I'll get in trouble, they might- what... the..." He trailed off staring at his hands.
"Dave? What's- OH HOLY SHIT-" Jack almost fell backwards over the railing, saved only by the fact that he was no longer tall enough to fall over the railing. He glanced over- whoever was on the rooftop with him didn't look like David. They looked like Jack.
But Jack wasn't over there. He was over here.
"Jack?!" The other person yelled.
It suddenly clicked. "DAVEY?!"
"Shhhh! It's 5am!"
"Sorry... just- jeez..."
"Guys?" A small voice in the corner made both the boys turn their heads. Les was standing there.
"LES?! What are you doing here?!" David panicked, instinctively trying to suppress the accent he now had.
Les gasped. "Jack, I didn't know you could talk like that!"
"U-Um..." David looked down.
"Why are you here?" Jack asked quietly.
"Ractrack told me to come get you, to walk me home. I have school today, remember?"
David and Jack shared a glance, remembering the deal David and Les had made with their parents- Les goes back to school while David's allowed to work, if he promises to study at home.
Normally walking Les to school was no big deal- Jack usually tagged along and they enjoyed the short walk together. But right now? Home didn't sound too appealing.
"Do you want to go home like this?" Jack mouthed.
"Hell no!" David mouthed back. He turned to Les.
"So are we going or not?" Les asked impatiently.
"Nope- you're skipping school today."
"But Mama-"
"We can talk to her later. Go on down and get ready, you're selling with Race today." Jack jumped in.
"Okay!" Les smiled, running off. Jack sighed.
"We owe Race big time for this."
"I'll take one of my father's cigars to give him." David promised, sitting up and sighing. "That was stressful."
"Are you kidding?! I don't even know what's going on!" Jack stood up and looked at the clothes he was wearing in disgust. "Your clothes are uncomfortable!"
"At least they aren't filled with holes." David snapped back.
"Ouch." Jack rolled his eyes. "Low blow, Dave."
"Sorry, but it's true! I'm cold!"
"Oh, be quiet." Jack smiled, wrapping David in a hug. He paused. "You're so short, how do you live like this?!"
"I'm only a few inches shorter than you!"
"That's a lot!"
