Past Friends and New Cases

Me and Finn are watching the news in the small T.V in our office. Apparently the American fugitives, Brooklyn and Daniel, have been sighted in Arizona. I sigh. ''Brooklyn used to be my friend, but then we had a falling out and well....you know'' Finn nods, and takes another bite into his pie, but glances at me in interest. He finishes his bite before asking me.

''Do you believe she's guilty?''

I shrug. ''I mean, there isn't any other way she could be innocent so...yes. I believe she and Daniel killed everyone. I don't want to, but their fingerprints were on the gun''

We are sitting at separate desks. I have my laptop in front of me, and I'm answering e-mails. Finn is lounging on the ancient couch, tomato sauce on his chin. He is currently on his third 'break'. He isn't usually unorganised, but there are days like this where I wonder how he got this job.

Just then, there are three knocks on our door in a pattern we both have learnt to recognise. Our boss Melaine walks into the office. I smirk as Finn rapidly tries to get up from the couch and act like he was answering emails. Melaine ignores him.

''Mikayla, Finn, I would like to offer you the case regarding Brooklyn Lopez, and Daniel Price. The previous investigators, Mrs Brown and Ms Shameirez have decides to leave the case, and as the next highest ranking, you both have been offered it''

I'm about to say yes- this could be the case of the century-but Finn interrupts. ''Thank you so much for the offer, Melaine, but I just need a minute to talk to Mikayla about this''

Melaine nods and leaves, closing the door behind her.

''Mikayla, we can't accept the case. Brooklyn is your friend, meaning you have a personal connection to this. By law, you can't accept'' I pause. Annoyingly, he is correct. I decide to grasp at strings. ''And I suppose you could quote where it says that?''

Finn rolls his eyes. ''Fine. Chapter thirty, section C, paragraph 1.6 'By law, if any personal relationships, past or present, may be made to the subject/s of the case, the officer is lawfully not able to accept the case. If the officer disregards, punishment may include being demoted from future cases''

I sigh. I should have known- Finn probably made that up on the spot, but still, it is the number one thing drilled into our heads. But maybe I can dangle a carrot for him. He obviously wants to take this case, so...

'''If you don't let me take this case, you can't take it either. Remember, we're a team'' Finn bites his lip, and I know I've got him. As an assigned team, we are required to work together on all our cases.

Finn sighs. ''Fine. But if the station discovers your connection, I'm playing innocent''

We shake hands, and go to tell Melanie the news. I think about the places Brook and Daniel have been.

''I reckon they're headed to Utah. Lets go!''
