Evangeline lay in bed, the sunlight filtering through the curtains, casting a soft glow around the room. But the warmth of the sun did little to chase away the chill that had settled deep within her. The sheets were tangled around her, a cocoon of fabric that felt both comforting and suffocating. She stared blankly at her phone, scrolling through social media, but none of it registered. Pictures of friends smiling, laughing, and living their lives only served to deepen the ache in her chest.
How did everything go so wrong? The question echoed in her mind, replaying the events of the past few days like a broken record. The memory of Ben's face, both angry and desperate, haunted her. His words lingered, a mix of love and betrayal that twisted in her gut. She felt lost, adrift in a sea of uncertainty, unable to grasp the shore of her own reality.
With a sigh, she tossed her phone onto the bed, the sudden silence around her amplifying the weight of her thoughts. The image of Lacy's pictures flashed in her mind, taunting her. Why would he even have those? The betrayal stung like a fresh wound, and she felt her heart harden a little more with each passing minute.
She tried to convince herself that she should feel angry, but instead, she felt numb, as if the emotions had drained from her, leaving behind a hollow shell. What was the point of it all? She had wanted to build a life with Ben, to dream about their future together, but now that dream felt tainted, fragile, and barely within her reach.
As her mind spiraled further into despair, the sound of her phone ringing broke through the thick fog of her thoughts. She picked it up, glancing at the screen to see Mary-Beth's name flashing. With a reluctant breath, she answered. "Hey, Mary-Beth," she said, forcing a semblance of normalcy.
"Evangeline? Why aren't you in class?" Mary-Beth's voice was concerned, the background noise of the classroom fading in and out.
Evangeline's heart sank. "I'm not feeling well," she lied, her voice lacking conviction. "Just a bit under the weather."
"Really?" Mary-Beth's tone shifted, skepticism evident. "Are you sure it's not just an excuse to skip? I know you really hate missing class."
Evangeline hesitated, feeling a wave of guilt wash over her. "No, I promise it's not that! I just need to rest a bit," she said, forcing the words out. She could hear the murmur of students around Mary-Beth, their chatter only heightening her sense of isolation.
"Alright, but I just want to make sure you're okay," Mary-Beth pressed gently. "Is there something else going on?"
Evangeline bit her lip, torn between the urge to confide in her friend and the heaviness of her situation. "It's nothing, really. Just... a lot on my mind," she replied, the lie tasting bitter on her tongue.
"Okay," Mary-Beth said, her voice softer now. "Just remember I'm here if you need to talk. And please don't hesitate to reach out if you need help with anything. We've got that project coming up, and I don't want you to fall behind."
"Yeah, I know," Evangeline murmured, feeling the weight of the project settle heavily on her shoulders. "I'll catch up, I promise."
"Alright, but don't just brush me off, okay? I care about you."
"Thanks, I won't, Mary-Beth," Evangeline said, forcing a smile that her friend couldn't see. She hung up, setting her phone down next to her. The silence in the room felt even more profound now, amplifying her sense of loneliness.
With a deep sigh, she lay back on her bed, staring at the ceiling. How did it come to this? The question echoed in her mind, an unwelcome reminder of the unraveling she had yet to confront.
The world outside her window continued on, indifferent to her pain, while she remained trapped in a cycle of self-doubt and heartache. She closed her eyes, wishing she could escape the turmoil within her, if only for a moment.
