Evangeline sat on the couch, her legs curled beneath her, her mind spinning. The air between her and Arthur felt heavy, charged with an intensity she couldn't shake. Every glance, every word exchanged in the last few minutes lingered in her mind like an echo, pulling her deeper into the gravity of him. She touched her lips absentmindedly, remembering the way he had kissed her-how his rough edges softened in those moments, how his warmth had seeped into her and left her breathless.

She couldn't stop thinking about him-about the way his hands had steadied her, the way his voice had cut through her chaos with quiet assurance. He made her feel seen, in a way that both thrilled and terrified her. And even though the rational part of her screamed that this was messy, that it could never end well, she couldn't bring herself to push him away.

Her gaze drifted to him where he sat at the other end of the couch, his posture relaxed but his blue eyes sharp and watchful. She felt a pang in her chest, a mix of longing and hesitation, as her thoughts swirled. He wasn't perfect-far from it-but there was something about him, something real and raw, that she couldn't ignore.

The silence between them stretched, comfortable but thick with unspoken tension. When he finally turned to look at her, his gaze meeting hers, her heart skipped a beat. She didn't know who moved first, but the space between them disappeared in an instant. Their lips collided, the kiss slow and exploratory at first, but it quickly deepened, growing heated as his hand slid to her waist and pulled her closer.

His lips found hers again, and this time the kiss was deeper, more insistent. Arthur's fingers tightened at her waist, pulling her closer, and she melted into him, her heart pounding in rhythm with his. Their movements were unhurried but growing more urgent, the world outside the room fading as they lost themselves in each other.

Evangeline gasped softly against his lips as his hands guided her onto her knees, her body following his lead without hesitation. He pressed closer, his lips never leaving hers as his touch grew firmer, his breath warm against her skin. The moment felt intoxicating, consuming-but then, without warning, a sharp wave of unease gripped her chest as he gently urged her forward, positioning her on her hands and knees.

Panic bubbled up, fast and unrelenting, snapping her out of the haze. The weight of him behind her, the vulnerability of the position-it sent her mind spiraling, dredging up memories she'd tried to bury. Her breathing grew shallow, her fingers curling into the cushions beneath her.

"Wait," she blurted out, her voice trembling but firm.

Arthur stilled instantly, his hands retreating as he leaned back. "Evangeline?" he asked, his voice low and cautious. He stayed close but gave her space, his blue eyes searching hers as he crouched beside her. "What's wrong?"

She sat back onto her heels, hugging her arms around herself as her chest tightened. Her throat felt thick, her words caught behind the lump forming there. "I... I can't," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "I can't do this."

Arthur's brow furrowed, concern etched into every line of his face. "Hey," he said softly, his tone gentle but insistent. "Talk to me. What's goin' on?"

Evangeline swallowed hard, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes as she tried to find the words. She took a shaky breath and glanced at him, her voice breaking when she finally spoke. "It's Ben," she admitted. "The last time with him... it wasn't... it wasn't good. It was rough, and I didn't want it. I didn't want any of it."

Arthur's expression darkened, his jaw tightening as his hands flexed at his sides. "He hurt you?" he asked, his voice calm but carrying an unmistakable edge of anger.

She nodded, unable to meet his gaze. "I let it happen," she said, her voice trembling. "I didn't say no, but I hated it. I hated everything about it. And now, I-" Her voice cracked, and she pressed a hand to her chest, struggling to steady her breathing.
