"And when will I get a scan?" I ask the Obstetrician.
"There won't be anything for you to see at the moment, so your first scan will be about 12 weeks, however you can go to a private scan from 7 weeks, although they can be quite expensive, but it will give you peace of mind if you need it before 12 weeks." Mr Khalil tells me, making a note of all the questions I've asked. "So if you're about day 21 of your cycle, you'll be classed as 3 weeks pregnant, as we measure from the start of your last period, so by the end of next month, you'll be able to go for a private scan. I can refer you to the maternity team, and you'll only need to be consultant led if there are any complications with your pregnancy, so hopefully you won't have to see me again. But while you're admitted to hospital, I can come to see you if you have any more questions." He smiles at me, closing his notebook to end the conversation.
The curtain opens and the nurse pops her head in, "River, you've got a couple of visitors." She smiles at me then looks to Mr Khalil, "Are we all finished here, Boss?"
"Yes, Margot, can you ensure a midwife comes to see River to discuss the dos and don'ts before she is discharged, please. And if River wants to speak to me again, she is more than welcome." He smiles to Margot, then says goodbye to me and steps out of the curtains. "Congrats, Mate." I hear him say on the other side of the curtain. The fuck?
"Hey, Man! Didn't realise you were a doctor now, and thanks, bit of a surprise, but taking it in our stride." Archer replies, he must know the obs and gynae doctor.
The nurse opens the curtains all the way, revealing Archer, the doctor and Hudson, with a very confused look on his face.
"Why are you congratulating Jack on my sister's broken arm?" Hudson asks Mr Khalil.
"Hudson!" I say, quickly distracting him from the question that I'm not ready for him to know the answer to yet. "Come here for a cuddle."
"Riv, I'm too old for cuddles," he tells me, crossing his arms.
"Well, come tell me how rugby was then, I'm glad you're clean, did you even play?" I say with a cheeky smile to tell him I'm joking.
"Of course I played," he rolls his eyes as he sits in the visitors seat, making Archer sit at the bottom of the bed, once he finishes talking to Mr Khalil.
Hudson tells me all about his rugby game and how his team won.
"I went to school with Khalil, we were friends until he went to sixth form and I left for college," Archer says, trying to scoot closer to me, as though he hasn't touched me for weeks.
"I was wondering how you knew each other." I take a sip of water.
"Are you going to be here long?" Hudson asks me, looking a bit worried.
"Hopefully not, I'll find out later and I'll text you to tell you." I tell him, "Archer, can you pass me my purse out of my bag please?"
He roots through my bag and passes me my purse, confusion on his face.
"Hudson, go to the café and grab yourself a drink and slice of cake, but eat it there, I don't want to be tempted, just let the nurse know that you're going, so they know you'll need letting back in." I offer him a ten pound note, earning a beaming smile from him as he runs off.
"I have you alone again," Archer comes to sit by me, pulling me into his side and kissing my hair, "I wish we were in a private room, I'd be able to kiss you properly." He whispers in my ear, making my heart flutter and my legs tighten to prevent a gush.
"You could take me to the toilet to help me, I do have a broken arm after all, you'll just have to be quick..." I turn to look at him, flutter my lashes and try to hide my giggle when he stands from the bed.
