The revelation of Orm's identity hung between them like a blade suspended in the air, sharp and dangerous, waiting to cut through the tension. Ling Ling Kwong stared at her half-sister, mind racing as she tried to piece together the fragments of her shattered reality. Orm-no, her sister-had been a spy, placed in her home by their father, a ghost she had long thought buried. And yet, despite the betrayal, despite the years of deception, Orm had stayed. She had chosen to protect Ling Ling.
But why?
Ling Ling shook her head, trying to focus. The encrypted message still glowed on her computer screen, its threat a stark reminder that they weren't safe. Someone knew her secret, and that someone was playing a deadly game. And now, with Orm's revelation, the stakes had only gotten higher.
"Whoever sent this message," Ling Ling began, her voice cold and steady, "they know more than just about the shipment. They know about you. About us."
Orm nodded, her face somber. "They've been watching for a long time. My presence here was supposed to be a secret, but clearly, someone figured it out."
"Do you think it's connected to Father?" Ling Ling asked, her mind whirling with possibilities. "Could one of his old allies be trying to manipulate us?"
Orm shook her head. "Father had enemies, but none of them had the resources to pull something like this. Whoever is behind this... they're closer than you think."
The words sent a chill down Ling Ling's spine. "Closer?"
Orm met her gaze, her eyes hardening with resolve. "There's a traitor in your inner circle."
For a moment, the room was deathly silent. Ling Ling's eyes flicked toward the door, her mind running through the names of those she trusted: Ko, her most loyal lieutenant; Yuen, the head of her security detail; and Mei, the trusted accountant who had handled her finances for years. Could it really be one of them? Someone who had been by her side through blood and fire?
"Ko has been with me since the beginning," Ling Ling murmured, more to herself than to Orm. "Yuen has no ambition beyond security, and Mei... Mei has no reason to betray me. What would any of them stand to gain?"
Orm's voice was soft but steady as she answered. "Power. Control. Everyone in your world has a price, Ling. The question is, who's been paid off?"
Ling Ling clenched her fists, fury bubbling beneath the surface. Betrayal was one thing she could never forgive. She had built her empire through loyalty, through fear, through ruthless efficiency, and now someone dared to threaten it all from within?
"I'm going to find them," she said, her voice low and dangerous. "And when I do..."
Orm nodded, her face grim. "We'll make them pay."
Just then, a knock on the door interrupted their conversation. It was sharp and urgent. Ko entered, his face pale, a mix of exhaustion and something darker written across his features.
"Ling," he began, not bothering with formalities. "We've decoded more of the message. There's a location tied to it. A warehouse near the waterfront-one of the old docks."
Ling Ling's pulse quickened. The same dock mentioned in the original threat.
"What else?" she demanded, stepping closer.
Ko hesitated for a moment, glancing briefly at Orm before continuing. "We traced the signal. It was routed through several layers of encryption, but eventually, we got a hit. It's coming from someone inside the mansion."
Silence descended on the room like a shroud.
Inside the mansion.
Ling Ling's eyes darkened, her fury building to a dangerous edge. She had been right. The traitor wasn't just close-they were right here, hiding in plain sight, watching her every move.
