Jason walked purposefully through the manor, his thoughts a jumble of confusion and unease. The familiar grandeur of the manor seemed almost indifferent to his turmoil as he headed towards the study. The weight of his feelings for Aubrey—Flare—felt heavier with each step.
He pushed open the study door and saw Alfred, ever the composed figure, working at his desk. Alfred looked up and offered a warm smile. "Master Jason, how can I assist you today?"
Jason entered the room, his demeanor troubled. "Alfred. I... I need help. Or advice at least."
Alfred gestured to a chair. "Please, have a seat."
Jason sank into the chair, his hands restless in his lap. "It's about my partner."
Alfred simply waited patiently for him to continue, knowing Jason was sorting through his own feelings inside his head.
"Aubrey makes me feel safe and valued in a way I haven't felt in a long time. It's like she understands and heals everything the pit and the Joker broke. Or some of it anyway. I want to tell her the truth about what happened but..."
Alfred's gaze was sympathetic. "It's understandable to feel this way after everything you've been through. The emotional scars can make it challenging to form close connections."
Jason nodded, his expression a mix of frustration and vulnerability. "The problem is, she's planning to leave once everything is settled. I want her to stay, but I don't know how to tell her. She's amazing and strong and everything I would want in a partner, but she seems determined to leave after things calm down."
Jason huffed to himself, thinking about how close the two had gotten the other night. "I'm afraid she'll see my struggles and think she deserves better. I worry I won't be enough for her because of my past and my own demons. She has her own to deal with, and all I want is to protect her from them, but she doesn't want the help. If i get to close im worried she'll shut me out."
Alfred's eyes softened with understanding. "It's clear that you care deeply for Miss Aubrey. Your past experiences and struggles are part of who you are, but they don't define your entire self. What matters most is how you choose to move forward and communicate with her."
Jason's voice wavered as he continued. "I've been so focused on not repeating the mistakes I've seen in others' relationships that I'm afraid I'll end up pushing her away. God, I haven't been intimate with anyone since returning from the pit. The trauma comes back every time I try, and i'm not even sure if I'm capable of being the partner she deserves. "
Alfred leaned forward, his tone both gentle and firm. "Master Jason, your compassion and sincerity set you apart. I never had to warn you about repeating the mistakes of Master Bruce and Master Dick, who unfortunately seem to have no qualms in that specific area. Instead i worry you do the opposite, you throw your heart into things fully instead of reserving it. In this case however, it's not about erasing the past but about moving forward with honesty and openness. Miss Aubrey likely cares for you because of who you are, not despite your struggles."
Jason looked up, his eyes reflecting a mixture of hope and doubt. "So what should I do? How do I tell her how I feel and that I want her to stay?"
Alfred offered a reassuring smile. "Speak to her openly about your feelings and concerns. Share with her your fears and your desire for her to remain a part of your life. Honesty can build a foundation of trust, and it allows both of you to navigate your future together."
Jason took a deep breath, feeling a sense of relief from Alfred's words. "I'll try to be honest with her. I just need to find the courage to do it." he muttered.
Alfred's smile was encouraging. "You have the strength within you, Jason. Trust yourself and your feelings. And do bring the girl by the Manor sometime, i would love to finally meet her."
Jason stood up, feeling more determined. "Thanks, Alfred. And i will sometime, you're gonna love her. She loves all things fall and she found this coffee shop with the best hot chocolate ever."
Alfred merely chuckled, seeing the boy he loved light up when talking about the young woman he was enamored with.
"She truly seems special Master Jason, I look forward to meeting her."
