Chapter 2
Both children were smart enough to know that now was not the time to hesitate, so they nodded their heads and turned to run, putting a certain distance between them.
Alana hid behind a tree and watched carefully.
In the distance, tall grass swayed from side to side, making a slight rustling sound. It's not one or two, but tens of meters wide of grass is staggering. Whatever comes, there must be a lot of them.
Suddenly, a little red light flashed through the blades of grass.
She looked at it closely.
The red light stopped. But then, sporadic red lights popped up, like some kind of eerie Christmas lights.
- Eater of Souls!
Alana felt that there were ants crawling on her back, and she couldn't help but shiver.
Thinking of Helen's "devouring souls and bringing their own curses", she cursed secretly, threw down the stone in her hand, and ran wildly.
The cool wind poured into her mouth and nose, and her stomach twitched. The wound that was not yet healed was torn again, but the instinct to survive overpowered.
At this moment, her thirst for power reached its peak.
Something had to be done!
She wants to live, to live freely and happily in this world!
What about God's outcasts? God can't define her life!
In the darkness of the night, her figure was as fast as an arrow from a string, approaching the magic tower in a straight line.
The tower was an iron triangular pyramid, somewhat resembling a modern sea buoy, with flames burning at the top, a stone slab carved with runes in the middle, and a hollow one below.
The two children rushed to the magic tower first, but they couldn't climb the vertical ladder in mid-air, and they spun around anxiously.
Alanna began to shout from afar: "Run! Keep running! Go hide in the abandoned barn over there, and don't come out!The two children looked at each other, knowing that staying would only be a drag on Alana, and gritted their teeth and turned to run towards the barn.
Alanna made up her mind for a moment, and without stopping for a moment, she jumped up the vertical ladder of the magic tower and quickly climbed the middle stone platform.
The roar was at her feet, but she was not distracted in the slightest, and after finding the rune for help, she immediately took out the activation reagent under the stone platform and splashed it.
The moment the silver liquid landed on the stone slab, a ray of light shot from the center of the magic tower into the sky. A shrill birdsong centered on the tower and spread in all directions.
Alana covered her stinging ears and fell to the ground.
She did, and the distress signal went!
But it takes time for the priest to arrive, and she can't rest yet, so she must continue to find a way to save herself. The magic tower won't just have a distress function, she may be able to find magic weapons.
Alana got up and was about to fumble around, when she saw a terrible scene.
A large group of densely packed, black-haired monsters roared and chased after them, but they didn't attack the magic tower, didn't even slow down, and headed straight for the nearby village.
A shrill shout pierced the sky.
Oh no, the kids are still in the barn!
Alana took two magic rune stones and stuffed them into her arms, and slid down the ladder to the ground, running all the way to the dilapidated barn.
Approaching the barn, she held her breath and slowed down, and climbed up to the second floor from the low shed on the side, bypassing the main entrance.
The two children were smart and hid in the southeast corner of the barn with their mouths covered. Ore and firewood are piled up there, forming an optimal shelter point.
Scarlet eyes mark the location of the three Eaters of Souls. They were scattered on both sides and in the center of the barn doorway, sniffing down and scraping the ground with their paws.
Alanna moved cautiously, slowly approaching the southeast corner.
But at this moment, one of the Eaters of Souls seemed to smell something, and inexplicably changed direction and headed towards the ore pile.
Theodore winced and snapped a piece of wood.
The Eater of Souls roared, and Alanna had no time to think, and leaped to the ground, rolling to the ground through the beams and the pyre.
"Alana—" Theodore exclaimed quietly.
She quickly got up and stood in front of the two children, "Let's see if we can activate these two runestones?"
Theodore and Liz had heard from their father about the use of basic runestones, and they were soon lit up.
Soon, the Eater of Souls realized that it was just an ordinary human who had jumped down, and immediately crashed into it with a roar. The piles of ore and firewood fell apart and rolled down towards them.
Alana hugged the two children tightly and dodged, her shoulders and arms were smashed, and new injuries were added to the old wounds.
"Throw the runestones!"
The red Attack Rune Stone and the blue Defense Rune Stone were smashed to the ground, igniting two bright flames that lit up the dark barn.
The Eater of Souls flinched back, cocked its head and howled. The voice was long and short, not like a threat, but like a signal.
Move the rescuers?
No, no, the three Eaters of Souls didn't avoid the rune stones, but were wandering in a certain direction. Thinking of them sniffing around, a guess quietly took shape.
Are they looking for something? Is this found, so signal?
"Stand back and don't move," Alana said tentatively, glancing back and forth between the ore and the pyre. Soon, she noticed that something was wrong, and the patterns on a certain piece of black ore were slowly flowing.
The nearby Eater of Souls seemed to pick up a signal from their companions, roaring in response, and running in the direction of the abandoned barn, causing the ground to shake slightly.
"Alana," Theodore sobbed in fear as she gripped her hand.
When it came to the line of life and death, Alana's mind became clearer and clearer.
The Eater of Souls was looking for this strange ore, but when it found it, it did not dare to approach, but instead sent a strange signal. What does this mean?
This ore can do them harm!
They are only responsible for finding, and someone else is responsible for taking the ore.
In other words, the boss hasn't appeared yet!
"Then there's only one way," Alana said with a deep breath, letting go of the two children's hands, and jumping up to grab the ore.
I thought there would be a burning flame or a cold stinging sensation, but nothing.
This thing seems to be hard, but it is actually soft, like her the clay used to make clay sculptures in the daytime. After gently pinching, you can feel a subtle pulsation.
Alana held the palm-sized ore in front of her.
The Eaters of Souls who poured into the barn seemed to see something terrible, whimpered and retreated in a panic, until finally squeezed into an arc around her.
She wanted to use the ore as a "shield" to protect her two children from escaping.
But his hands and feet were suddenly "frozen", and his mind seemed to be infected with a virus, and his mind became jammed and confused.
The strange ore grew softer and softer, and it stretched out its wicked and slippery tentacles around her fingers, and the blood stains on her palms melted little by little, and a blood-colored eye was reflected in her eyes.
"Alana," Liz called out urgently, sensing that something was wrong.
The Eaters of Souls were even more restless, gurgling in their throats and their claws digging wildly across the ground, as if they were struggling between attacking and fleeing.
The cries of the children mixed with the cries were in her ears, but Alanna couldn't hear anything.
Her mind was pitch black, with countless eerie symbols floating like stars.
The largest symbol glowed with a strange red light, and she obviously didn't understand it, but she read it out inexplicably:
"Death-"
The sharp howl suddenly stopped, and dozens of fierce and terrifying Soul Eaters were suddenly frozen.
Then, an unseen hand appeared out of thin air, holding them in the air like pieces of paper, and tearing them apart lightly.
Before the stinking limbs and flesh could hit the ground, they were burned by the blood-colored flames, and gradually turned into patches of scorched earth.
A drop of blood rolled down Alanna's cheek and landed on the clay kitten in her breast pocket.
"Alana?"
"Alanna!"
Two pairs of warm little hands grasped her fingers and shook them from side to side.
Alanna seemed to be wrapped in a cocoon-like dream, and the constant cries of the children tore her back from the brink of being lost.
She snapped her eyes open and crouched down, "You're not hurt, are you?"
Theodore and Liz were slightly injured, but shook their heads in unison.
"Then let's get out of here." Although she doesn't know how she did it, she did grab the prey of a certain boss, and now she must run quickly.
Skirting the foul-smelling black scorched earth, they came to the door of a nearby stone house.
If she could, Alana hoped to borrow a horse or carriage and go on like this, even if the two children could hold on, she would be about to fall.
Before she could step forward, the door of the stone house opened first, and out came an elderly couple.
"Good night sir, madam, we..."
"We see," said the old woman, with a gentle smile.
Alanna chuckled inwardly and didn't answer.
The old woman pointed to the magic tower not far away, "My husband and I were sitting by the window, and we saw that you lit the magic tower and sent out a distress signal, so we immediately took out the defensive rune stone and closed the doors and windows.
"If it weren't for you, we might not be here anymore."
Alana didn't know how much they had seen, if things in the barn were known......
The old woman seemed to see what she thought, "The abandoned barn is our house, but we don't know what's going on. You saved us, and that's all that matters. Alanna's
heart moved slightly, this lady was willing to cover for her.
"You may call me Mrs. Jones," she said, gesturing to the stone house, "it's too cold outside, would you like to come and sit in my house?" It was also possible to stay for one night.
Alanna shook her head, although the other party looked very kind, but she caused a lot of trouble tonight, it was best to be vigilant, "Can you borrow Madame's horse or carriage?"Mrs. Jones was embarrassed, "I'm sorry, but my husband and I don't travel far from home very often, so we don't have a carriage at home." She paused, "But I have extra clothes and food at home, so take them."
Alanna was a little regretful, "Then thank you, ma'am."Mrs. Jones took the clothes and bread and handed them over, "This is my son's old clothes, they may be a little oversized, I hope you don't dislike them."
Alana took the clothes and handed them to Liz, "Of course not, I'll wash them in two days and send them back to you."Mrs.Jones was silent for a moment, "No, you can keep it." If he had known what had happened today, he would have done so.
Alana thanked her solemnly, "Then we won't bother."
She turned around with her two children in her arms, and saw a carriage rolling by. When she got closer, she recognized it as the gentleman who had rejected their "pitch" not long ago.
"Ahem," the man jumped out of the carriage and stepped forward, "get in the carriage, and I'll take you back."
Alanna's eyes lit up, and she guessed that the other party's reason was the same as that of Mrs. Jones, "But I'm a God's outcast, don't you mind?"The man's cheeks were hot, and his eyes dodged, "What God's outcast, hasn't Lord Helen clarified?" And, you saved me and my family, I..."
He took a deep breath, puffed out his chest and said loudly, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have treated you like that. Your younger siblings are excellent, you, you're a good boy too.
Alana Waner accepted this gift of "charcoal in the snow".
When the three of them sat in the car, they found that they also had clothes, shoes, bread and water, and even healing potions concocted by the Night God Cult.
Theodore wrapped his thick clothes around his body and nestled in Alanna's arms, "It's good that we can go home."
Liz did the same, huddling with him, "Hopefully tomorrow will be a different day."
Alanna looked at the dilapidated barn farther and farther away, and secretly prayed in her heart that tonight would turn the page smoothly and not cause her and the children trouble.
She closed her eyes and leaned back on the seat, not noticing that the clay kitten on her chest moved slightly.
