I woke up the next morning to see Nicholas still next to me. I looked around and remembered we were still at the inn. My stomach growled and I realized I hadn't really had a proper meal in a day or two. I wanted a good breakfast, and maybe we could get that here.
I woke Nicholas up and we both made our way to the tavern to have some breakfast. We ordered our food and sat down at a nearby table.
An older man who was sitting at a table in the corner of the room came over to us. "You kids seem to be new here." He said.
"Well, In a way, we are." I responded. This man seemed weird, but I didn't think too much about it. "I don't think you two know much about this kingdom. Would you like to learn about what happened to this land?" The old man asked. "Sure." Nicholas said.
The old man began his story. "A long time ago, there were twins who were the children of the royal family. On the day they were both to be crowned, one of them decided to try and sabotage it and take the kingdom for themselves. But he was unsuccessful.
"A few years later, the King got married to a beautiful young woman. A few months after that, his brother escaped the dungeon and took over. He was looking for a child, but no one could find it. No one has heard from the king or queen in years."
"Wow. That was... interesting. I think we should get going." I said, nudging Nicholas in the arm. This guy was starting to seem very shady. "Yeah, we should." He said, silently agreeing with me. "Thank you for telling us your story though."
We grabbed our things and left the inn. I felt a little shaken after that. "Wilbur? What's wrong?" Nicholas asked. "I'm just still thinking about what he said. I knew that one of the twins took over this kingdom, but I didn't know he was looking for a baby..."
"Maybe you're that baby."
What he said made me stop and stare at him. "What do you mean?"
"Well, it seems like you were taken to the human realm when you were a baby, and that tyrant is looking for a child." He explained. "And you also said that he looked like you."
"But that would mean... I'm related to him!" Maybe that's why he was looking for me, because I'm his son!
"I don't want to be related to a tyrant, I can't be!" I couldn't believe what I was thinking. How could that be true?
Nicholas put his hand on my shoulder. "Hey, I don't believe you're related to a tyrant. No one would. Just try not to think about it for now, and we'll figure all of this out later."
I began to feel at least a little bit better. "Alright, I will."
***
We kept traveling until we found the next town, Northsbury. I looked around and felt that this place was a little familiar...
"This is the same town I saw in my dream!" I exclaimed. "The streets, the houses, everything looks just about the same."
"Except now there's a tyrant."
We walked around, trying to see if I could recognize anything else when I saw some knights that seemed to be made out of smoke, or dark clouds. They were knocking on the door of someone's house. A middle aged woman answered the door. I could just barely hear her.
"I'm sorry, I still don't have any money. The crops, they won't grow! Maybe I can pay you later?" I guess they couldn't grow because there is no sun, and because people can't use magic.
Another voice spoke, presumably the knight. "I'm sorry, but you know the rules. If you can't give us the money you owe, we have to find something to replace it."
"No! Please, I'll pay you double when I get the chance!" She pleaded. "Just don't take anything from me, please!" She seemed very desperate. I'm sure I would be if I was in her place and didn't have any money.
"Should I help her?" I asked. "I don't think so. I don't want you causing a scene and making that tyrant come after us." Nicholas answered.
"But I don't want her to suffer! Those creepy knights are going to take her stuff!" I was starting to get impatient.
"But Wilbur-" He tried to stop me but I cut him off.
"Whatever. I'm doing this myself." I said, feeling more and more angry. I went up to the house, feeling some kind of energy flowing through my body. It felt weird, but I wasn't really paying attention to that.
"Hey knights!" I shouted. "What do you want, kid?" I could tell they didn't like distractions. They just wanted to get their job done, and I wasn't going to let them.
I was starting to feel the rage taking over my body. I had never felt like this before. "Leave this woman alone!" I shouted. But that wasn't me. It was like someone else was in control of my body. "Oh yeah? What are you going to do about it?" One of them asked, smugly. That just made me even more angry at them.
Before I knew it I was blasting light at every single one of those knights. They tried to fight back, but they couldn't even get close to me. I was too strong. I got rid of every single one of them that I could see. They all disappeared and turned into dust.
The rage began to disappear from my body, and I slowly began to regain control. It was replaced with fear, and exhaustion.
"Thank you young man!" The woman said. "I am so grateful."
"I-it was nothing." I said. "I just didn't want you to lose your stuff."
"Well, you should be careful. After what you just did, Alex is surely going to be looking for you now. I'd watch out if I were you."
Alex was going to be looking for me?! I figured he was the tyrant who ruled this land.
Even though I was scared, I still felt proud of what I had just done. I went back over to Nicholas.
"We need to get moving, now."
